I get your point, but don't try and put any blame on this dude. Spending $30k+ on a vehicle, and having to immediately work on it so that it doesn't break is not something that should be considered normal.

You are Right... I am OVER60.. I worked in a service station to put myself thru college also...
I do not trust MY truck to some snot-nosed 15 yr old in the "back shop"...
I cannot see what those "F"'s are doing to MY truck....
They are leaning up against it... (If I saw that, I'd kick 'em in the balls)..
When I asked for a PHYSICAL tranny fluid level check..... I got the Tech out of the back to show me how much trouble that process is, on his computer... I said... "I know what it entails"....(Yes it takes some time and effort).. will you do this for me as I have purchased $120,000 worth of vehicles from you guys in the last 12 years....

    Their response.... NO..!

They will NOT ever see my truck (or the Ole ladie's Corolla) there again.... and I'll buy elsewhere if I need another..!!
Dealers are "rip-off artists" and scammers..!!

It's not hard to maintain these things.... Dealers DO NOT do that... you have to take control and maintain YOUR vehicle...

    That's MY 25 cents....(I've rambled a little)... hehe

Yeah that's the attitude I received too. I have a lot of friends in dealer service departments. The shop rate for non warranty work in the Vancouver area is $100-120/hr and the warranty rate from Toyota is substantially less than that. Typically that means they give it to the lowest on the totem pole and have them do the job. You can occasionally pull a master tech if they are an hourly paid employee and just want something different. But the guys that are really good and efficient usually use a different pay structure. They usually split the dealer labor cost 50/50 so the quicker they work and get the job done the more they make.

If I ever need something warranty wise I book in with someone I know and basically call in favors for the job to actually get done. Shame honestly as they are supposed to be the experts and the trusted source.

a mixed bag for sure. I've done all the same maintenance after purchase. shit that should not have needed to be done by me. The service dept at the stealership I bought from is absolutely god awful. I consider them "toyota" even though they are a franchise. that is toyota's reality to deal with.
In the end, I love my truck, I hate my dealer and I'm disappointed in toyota.

I'd suggest you get estimates on your vehicle for a trade in. What I'm doing. I'm tired of Toyotas crap and piss poor customer service. I didn't sign up for a unfinished product when I purchased it. Seriously you'll spend more time in the dealerships than actually driving the dam thing. I'm looking at F150 with the 2.7 or 3.5 Ecboost soon. Trade in value should around 33k or so. I'll jump ship for the right price.

I don't hate the 3.5. Although we will see in the years to come how the ecoboosts, and especially the now-older ones do at higher mileage...

I feel your pain. I hope it works out for you.

I dumped mine a couple weeks ago and got a Subaru. Couldn't be happier. I have 650 miles on it now and its perfection---I had been to the dealership with my Tacoma at this point in ownership. So its already winning there as well.

If you're smart you will recheck all work that was performed by the dealer. The air pressure in my tires is never at the correct pressure, wheel lugs are sometimes not at the proper torque. I always make sure the oil drain plug and oil filter housing are tight. For my peace of mind, and my family's safety.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Which is why I avoid the the dealer and do it myself. No need to go somewhere that need to recheck after.

I kept my 16 Taco for 6 mos and 14,000 miles. After numerous trips to the dealer on the epileptic tranny (even after the TSB flash), the groovy wavy hood and piss poor mpg- I traded it on a '16 Silverado with a 6.2 8spd tranny.

No issues after 21,000 miles on the Chebby. None. Better mpg to boot.

I lost $2,500 on the Taco. Never buying a turd gen again. Maybe a Jap made 4-Runner, but not a turd gen Taco. Not impressed. Want off road? Buy a Jeep

I used to have a major hard-on for Subaru’s. Then I heard all sorts of issues that aren’t model or generation specific. I hope for your case you didn’t trade one problem for another (that has yet to develop).

We were seriously considering a Suburu except the closest dealer is 2hours away. Then our neighbor who had one (mechanical engineer and excellent hands on skills) started explaining all of the potential issues. He said unless you toss it while still under warranty you are holding a live hand grenade. Best of luck.

Yup, that's the problem. My buddy has been a mechanic for a bunch of dealers over the past 10 years. He said warranty work pays shit so anyone with a lot of experience either just does specialty work and doesn't typically pull warranty tickets unless it's a really slow day. Warranty work typically get sent to the new guys he said.

That said i haven't had any issues with my 2017 OR 14k miles in..knock on wood. Had some howling driving around 40mph from some uncapped holes catching air but that was an easy fix.

Seems like a lot of the issues people have are on 2016 tacos. Has it been typical to see at lot of problems in the 2017's?

Truth be told I waited a model year before getting a new gen to avoid any of the growing pains.

We had a 2008 Forester 5spd MT and loved it!! But, my wife crashed hard and killed totaled it. The good news she walked away unscathed and that is why we bought that car. Now, she has a 2011 Outback Premium with the CVT, which we got form the totaled Forester. This cars has been great with ~118,000 miles and still running very strong. The only issue is head lights, this thing burn thru headlights and are a pain in the ass to change. Overall, they have been good cars for us here in NH!!
