It might be grease, if it got too hot, it might have reached its breakdown state and ran down...

They deemed the first one was bad and leaking. Replaced it and now the drive shaft and bearing get real hot. Plus the low pitch drone after 60+ mph. That's the issues. Thinking drive shaft out of balance now. Can see small chunks of metal missing on u joint where they banged around on it.

Crazy question, are the bearing internally lubricated and sealed? What are they using for it to be "leaking"?

I don't understand why a driveshaft would get hot. Transmissions and differentials get hot, could they heat up the drive shaft? I will test mine with the infrared thermometer 'cause I'm curious now.

My drive shaft is not warm at front by transfer case. Just from that bearing toward the front of truck about half way down shaft so it's apparent the bearing is getting hot. The vibration/ low pitch noise is what bugs me now more than the shaft getting hot. But they are definitely related in my opinion as it didn't do it before bearing replaced. Perhaps drive shaft barely out of balance. Can see where they hit the U joint and knocked chips off right by that bearing. I suspect it doesn't take much to get the shaft off balance.

Does anyone know: are these couplers greased, or is there oil; encapsulated around a bearing?

Usually heat would come from bearing gall/out of round or too much friction in seals.

If it's too hot to touch by the bearing and not away from the bearing the bearing is going bad.

I had the same problem. I removed the driveshaft and now just use 4wd. My gas mileage has increased 27% partially due to the fact that I removed the third member and the cooler wheel bearings that are now air cooled.

In today's edition of what's wrong with my carrier bearing/drive shaft? My new bearing is leaking and vibrations getting more noticeable. Thinking drive shaft is out of balance. Appointment Monday, we'llswe what happens.

No, but maybe I should put one on to cancel the vibration/noise

Noticed mine is leaking today while I was under there. I wiped the oil? off and I'll keep an eye on it and check it again in a few days.

Could these bearings cause the howl that people are experiencing?

Now dealer says that's how they come. Packed with that oil and when it gets warm it may leak excess out. I ended up jacking rear tires off ground and checking drive shaft. It does not spin straight. Dealership finally listened to me and confirmed it was out of balance. Getting new driveshaft this week. We'll see if it fixes vibration/noise.
