I'm buying a Tacoma in the next month or two to replace my aging 2wd F-150. I hunt about 20 days a year, and the places I go, 4wd is a huge plus. Nothing extreme though. Muddy logging roads and the like, occasional deeper or slipperier mud. No rocks to crawl here in central Mississippi.

Here's the reason for my question. I have a 29 mile commute each way, 5 days a week. I'd like to optimize road comfort and handling, while still being able to trust my off road capability on hunting days. I've test driven a DCSB TRD Off Road, but not a Sport.

Does the TRD Sport 4wd handle better on the highway, or is the OR just as good? The OR package seems to give you more for your money, but maybe things I'll never use. Would be willing to sacrifice a little capability (Crawl Control, MTS) if the on-road ride that I'll use every day is significantly better.

Anyway, hope to get some advice here. What's your experience been?

I bought the OR because of the locking diff. If that isn't important to you, go with the Sport. Looks "cooler" than the OR since more of the panels are body color matched, although the black fenders have been growing on me.

Its been covered many times on here and you can search the forum for peoples experience on them. You asked for Comfort and Handling for on road use, you will have to decide which one of those is more important. The OR offers a smoother ride but won't handle as well, the Sport has a Harsh ride but handles better.

you are going to get answers on both sides. I love my sport and think it handles awesome for a truck on the highway. I am not afraid to take it where my old one went. Go drive them both before you make a choice. But the Manual trans is awesome.

Bladsville - Thanks man. Similar thinking here. I like the locker, but i think the hood scoop looks ridiculous, since it doesn't function.

Shakerhood - Thanks for the response, and the re-direction. I hadn't seen that description anywhere, and it's exactly the sort of feedback i was seeking. I'll hit the search bar hard and dig some more. New to the forum and the search feature here. Seems these sites all have different little intricacies that make them go.

So, would you be comfortable taking the Sport on muddy tracks like logging roads during a rainy winter? I would think 4Lo would suffice for most needs. Your thoughts?

Both trucks need a tire upgrade regardless of which package you go for if you're taking it in mud.

The OR has a Rear Locker which the Sport does not, that can be of benefit if you are getting into Mud, the Sport is by no means a Slug on the trails just a little less capable.

My first time taking my OR offroad, I used both the locker and MTS to get out of some very slick mud (granted on stock tires). Without those, my truck would still be sitting there. Had the truck for less than 3 months and have been very happy to have the extra functional technology at least 4-5 times. 100% get the OR. They're the same price, and it's better to have and not need than to need and not have. The OR ride on highway is perfectly fine.

Pretty sure you'd never say to yourself "Thank god I have the hood scoop and matching fenders."

    Like, so many.
I've seen videos on here of the Sport doing some pretty extreme stuff. Or check out Taco Bandit to see what a Sport can do (his friend Chad's truck). I'm like OP. Mostly on road so the Sport made sense for me. I upgraded those tires literally as soon I drove off the lot though.

I would recommend TRD Offroad instead of TRD Sport. I just bought a 2017 DCSB TRD OR.

Actually watching a couple of those Tacobandit videos is what had me doubting that I'd need the OR goodies. Had similar Toyos on my wife's RAV4, and hated them. Really crap in the rain.

I prefer the black fender look. I think the Sport matching colors are too "matchy matchy" etc.

Haha. Ok, that's probably the end of the debate for me. Using the same logic I use for personal defense for transportation. Better to have it and not need it. When I think of it in that light, even if there is a handling advantage in the Sport, the OR gear could save my ass. It's the highway ride that I'm more concerned about on road, anyway, and I'm learning on here that people seem to attribute a plusher highway ride to the TRDOR than the Sport. I can get a midlife crisis sports car in a few years for handling shenanigans.

Also, from reading other threads, I might be the only person on here who likes the black trim better. Fuck it, TRDOR DCSB, coming to a driveway near me soon then. Now to look at entirely too many pictures to decide on a color.

    Thanks for the input guys.

I have the TRD DCSB SPort 6spd - and I would recommend it. The OR has some cool features, but no SKWEP... Just kidding either truck will suit you well

    Yep, but it need tires.

Agree at least with the sport.

And you never hear the sport guy saying I got to pay how much to have the locker, crawl control and what not fixed. I do agree the sport is over priced based on what the OR costs. Oh and the scoop looks awesome and provides smile factor.

Congrats, if you get the chance drive one with a manual before you buy.
