So glad I found this thread. I checked mine and now I have to figure out what to do with it. I wonder if its the weatherstrip rubbing on the elevated spot weld edges. I appreciate any advice. its only a 1 year old truck with rust.

I took mine in and they are going to remove the bed and grind it all down and clean it and repaint.

with every rust thread that pops up here i'm happier and happier that i only leased my tacoma. love to buy a truck but i see them from all the manufactures rusting way too soon. just can't see actually buying one and having a rust bucket by the time its 8 years old.. that would suck.

I’m not concerned. It looks to be from the weather strip rubbing on the raised spot welds. They will take care of it.

Finally got approval from Toyota regional rep to repair the rust on the spot welds of the bed under warranty...the rep called the rust “premature” it’s in the shop now getting repaired.

Well my theory is that my Taco’s Bed was left in a humid place while tack welding and was not painted right away at the factory. I’m sorry but any kind of body rust after a year is unacceptable especially when you pay 44k for a loaded taco. Makes me wonder what else was also not done right on the truck. Taking it in for its 20k oil change going to address with the dealer.

Hopefully they do a nice job. Have seen way too many crappy paint repairs over the years. Sometimes the surface rust was the better option. :)

    I know, I know!
They say rust never sleeps! I sprayed between the cab and bed earlier this year (directly onto the paint) after taking with another Taco owner at the local gas station. He too had a quicksand, about a year old with very noticeable rust. I highly suggest everyone spray theirs with fluid film and re apply when necessary.

By the time this truck rusts out we will probably be driving (or riding in) vehicles made from completely non-ferrous materials.

This is the likely culprit. Raw metal always rusts around the welded areas first.

You don't realize how quickly rust sets in until you work in a weld shop.

I got my truck back from the dealership today...the rust on the pinch welds was repaired under warranty. They had the truck for a week and did an excellent job looks better than new! Total cost to Toyota warranty was $1718.20 MUCH THANKS TO THE O.P. for bringing this issue to my attention had I not read your post I probably wouldn’t have ever noticed this area of the body.
