That more aftermarket parts might be a big selling point or some people

That is a good point. If you stick her in 4, lock the rear dif, then doesn't it kinda become a matter of whose lighter to pop over those rocks... Taco might be better off with all that weight shed, so it's could be easier to pop over stuff

Probably depends on driver, but I have a 2016 stock 4Runner Trail Premium and a 2017 stock Tacoma DCOR. Been to OHV parks in both, stock tires, stock height, stock skids.

Both did great honestly. 4Runner would be my choice, however.

Wait, what? How is that even humanly possible. The Tacoma has a 36 month 74% residual value.

Has your Tacoma been in an accident?

I've watched a ton of videos. Even TFL car didn't pick one of the pros, they just blew sunshine over both of them. Argh!!

Probably didn't pay off his first vehicle he bought and rolled it into his loan. Or paid too much and didn't test drive it

I see what you're going for now, but I don't think there's a video out there that is going to single-handedly decided for you.

4Runner has fully boxed frame, coils all around, and a built in camper shell with the ability to load a expedition rack on the top, more cab room between driver and rear passengers, manual transfer case shifter, shorter wheelbase, better approach / departure (less overhang on rear).

Tacoma has more cargo capacity (especially with camper added), higher towing capacity, less cab space, worse departure angle, longer wheelbase (better for towing), electronic 4x4 actuator.

Sounds like you don't know what you want to do with this.

Wife has a 4Runner, that's our road trip, expedition, and family friendly ride.
I have Tacoma, cause haul dirty stuff and not have to put it in the vehicle, tow more, and tow a little better. Kiddo in the back is a little more cramped.

If you buy "The best offroad vehicle ever" you'll later figure out that isn't what you meant to buy because of one of the reasons above.

You want best off roader, Jeep. You want best roadtripper? 4Runner. Stupid high resale with most towing and cargo carrying? Tacoma.

All 3 have an aftermarket that you can make any of those a completely monstrous off roader. That's not the point, figure out what you need first. Pimp said thing later or you'll just wish you bought one of the other 2.

I like how you put it. Pick the car that's most useful, and turn it into a beast off-roader. Since i don't have a family, maybe i'll give the tacoma a shot. It sounds as though you can't go wrong with either. I don't mind throwing dirty junk in the back of my 4Runner, but that's 18 years old. I'm sure if i got a new one i'd be strapping them into a roof basket

I've seen the Offroad/Pro 4Runner and Tacomas tackle some crazy stuff on some of these expedition style overlanding videos. I'm sure the Wrangler is equal to or perhaps even better on trails. The reason I went with the Tacoma and not the Rubicon was space, you can haul more stuff. Plus Toyota's are known for durability and reliability, maybe even more so than the Jeeps. (Even though they're not made in Japan anymore). Also, the Tacomas have slightly better fuel economy. :)

Pretty sure The Fast Lane Trucks, did a comparison on this exact topic. Youtube it.

I would imagine the 4Runner due to the bed length on the Tacoma. But both are super capable. But both would lag behind a Wrangler Rubicon or Wrangler Sport for that matter. Can't beat a Wrangler off-road. I came from a 13 Wrangler Unlimited six speed with 35's and a 3 inch lift. My Tacoma doesn't match up at all, totally different vehicle and I would never try to take my Tacoma where I took my JK. I miss the JK (will be getting a new Jeep when they come out), but the Tacoma is a great off road vehicle, just not as capable as a Wrangler. Win Win

I have blown up toyota engines and still am exited to get my 3rd gen tacoma, it should be ready to pick up in 3 weeks.

If you want a toyota and want a great offroad vehicle you should be comparing the 1985 4runner to the 1985 pickup

I have owned both. First year for fuel injected 22re and last for factory straight axle. In my opinion these are the best toyotas to do dedicated offroading. They have no problem turnin 40 inch tires and taking some massive abuse.

You shouldnt buy a 30-40k vehicle to offroad. If you do plan on this than get an sr utility 4x4 5 speed 3rd gen for under 30k dollars like I am doing.

You can use some of that saved gas money to improve your rear bumper to match the 4Runner departure angle ;)
Ah i've done the old car mantnience. It's been enough strain on my wallet maintaining an 18year supercharged runner. I am ready to set on a new car and make her last. Tired of old car problems- they're never ending.

Step 1: Get a sweet ride and lift it up, meaty tires, sexy accessories.
Step 2: Will soon have family. You won't be able to beat the ladies off with a 10' stick.
Step 3: Then you'll have a family, needs will change.
Step 4: One of you will end up with 4Runner, other with a Tacoma.
    Step 5: Problem solved.
