I found a set of aluminum 17" wheels (Mazda) including tires on CL, and they have the correct 5-bolt pattern and axle diameter to fit on my 2001 high powered 2.4 liter ultra-low 170K mile, 2001 5-lug Tacoma
They are 7" instead of 6" wide. and their offset is 45 instead of 40.
Can I fit these on my truck without a lift?
When I look at the wheel fitment guides, they only go up to 16" wheels.

Also, what are the advantage of larger, wider wheels?
I'm assuming the ride would be smoother and more comfy.

If the tires on the 17" wheels are the same overall diameter as your current tires, I would think those wheels should fit fine. Use the TW tire size calculator to compare your current tire size to the new size. I doubt it would be smoother and more comfy because if you are maintaining the same overall tire diameter, going up in wheel size means you are decreasing tire sidewall height and that usually translates to feeling the road more.

I have Hyundai Sonata 16x6.5 wheels with a 44 offset and they fit perfectly, no rubbing. Tires are 1/2" taller than stock and better quality than what I had on there so ride quality for me was unchanged.

Which wheels are you looking at? I was also looking at some Mazda 3 wheels before I bought mine.

depending on which model they come from, most Mazda center bores should be 67.1, same as 1st gen 5 lug taco

I have 17x7.5 Ford Mustang rims with a 37mm offset. They fit fine... except I think the 235 width tires do scrape a little on big bumps. By comparison your rim will sit 2mm closer inboard.. and be 14mm further inset from fender.

As long as you stay in a 215 section tire at max.. i'm willing to bet it will work well.

My truck rides alot smoother than th factory 14" tires. Handles better. But I can definitely feel the "weight" of the 17" rims and giant tires, performance has suffered. I too have the 2.4L monster engine
