Ok so recently I was coming down a pretty steep slope on a trail and maybe it was just me but my brakes definitely seemed like they needed some help. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t terribly bad, but with sliders, skids, and eventually going 35s, I’ve become increasingly interested in a Big brake kit due to the weight.

Thing is, I want 16” wheels, but seems like most BBk require 17s?

Anyone know if I can run bigger brakes on 16s? Or am I just going to have to do 17s?

The 4runner brake upgrade requires 17's, and the TRD Sport 17's don't clear the 4runner brake calipers, only some 17's work.

There's far more tire and rim choices for 17" rims, but be sure of fit prior to choosing.

If you chose to do a drop bracket lift (4-6") for 35's you'll get a new knuckle which will require 18" rims.

Were you in low range or a low gear? That will take a lot of pressure of the brakes.

Oh man, didn’t consider the fact that not all 17 clear.

So original plan was SCS F5 wheels, 16” 0 offset with the 3.50 backspacing. 3” lift (bend, chop, and bang the crap out of everything) and stuff some 35s. But with sliders, full skids and 33s i can already feel the weight on steep down hill slopes which is what’s made me consider a brake upgrade.

I was, and again it wasn’t terribly bad but I think the more weight I add the more noticeable it’ll become.

First, be sure to gears on steep trail descents. You can also add more braking ability with heavier rotors for more heat capacity that have redesigned and improved cooling for better performance. For peak performance I’d suggest a semi-metallic pad like the StopTech Sport pads. Semi-metallics will work at a higher operating temperature range and provide improved friction. See the thread below for more info. (Note the thread recommends performance ceramics as a balance option, but for your case Semi-Metallics will be a better option).

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/brake-upgrade-stoptech-rotors-trd-performance-pads.523829/

All that said, a big brake kit will definitely perform best. But good gains can be had utilizing stock sized components.

I hae the 4runner kit which takes 17's as folks mentioned. I believe stoptech makes a 16" version BBK. Bigger 6 piston calipers but smaller rotor.

In low, did you manually select the gear if using an auto? Dropping the auto manually down to 1st or 2nd will usually hold it.

Thanks a lot! I’ll definitely look into it. Definitely cheaper alternative for the time being.

I am also in this boat... Kinda. Trying to plan for the future, which includes 35s and alotta wieght.

I was kinda hoping the SCS wheels would work with the BBK (scs ray 10s, 17", using the stoptech 6piston BBK).

I guess ill be keeping my eyes on this thread (and others) for confirmation on which wheels work, if wheel spacers will be needed with said wheels for 35s AND if theyll fit the particular BBK im after.

Hmm.. good point, I did not. I’ll have to give that a try. I assumed it was always in 1st gear?

    Ill definitely look into it.

You think a smaller rotor would make a substantial difference?

the 17's ray10's will work. I believe Vin runs that on his tacoma.

Nope, it will shift through the gears like normal, and if coasting downhill it will favor a higher gear. Makes a huge difference to manually put the auto in 1st or 2nd when in 4low.

It will be similar to what you have rotor wise but the big upgrade will be the calipers. The BBK uses a better rotor too so all round it would be awesome! Maybe one day ill upgrade to the BBK stoptech makes. Willwood and a couple others also have some kits.

That honestly never crossed my mind. Almost sounds counter productive to have 4Lo+high gear? I’ll give it a shot this weekend. Thanks for the awesome tip!

I have 17” ray 10s with StopTech 6 piston BBKs.

Edit : I think the 20% off code still works.

He owns SCS wheels. Only main one I have heard that it does not fit is the TRD sport wheels. My buddy just setup the kit on his and I thin he is running Method 705's. He did have to run a spacer but that due to the LCA not the calipers If I recall. @alvinfromhawaii ?

The higher gears are still at a lower ratio as compared to the same gear in 4HI.
