    Hey folks,

Brand new to the forums, and Tacos so apologies in advance if this has been covered, or is completely normal:

I bought a 2018 Sport upgraded with a 6 speed, has 30k on it, was a lease return, services on time at the local dealer, no issues noted... now the "issue"

Maybe it's just me and how I shift, perhaps I'm not doing it properly for this truck but has anyone noticed the transmission at times feels a little rough to engage? like it always will but every so often just a little feedback from the stick, like it's not going in smoothly.. I do have a lot of experience with manuals, just not on tacos.

Hard to explain.. maybe not enough RPM's? do I need to rev match? double clutch? tricks to driving these trucks? Something just feels a little off at times and it isn't butter smooth all the time like I thought it would be..

    Thanks for any tips guys/gals!

I think you check the fluid. It maybe thick or degraded, so that can cause this issue.

Yes, particularly into 2nd and 3rd.
I'd suggest changing the fluid to Motorcraft xt-m5-qs. It helps smooth things out a bit. RockAuto sells it for around 15/qt.
I've found that quick shifts around 3k rpm are the smoothest for me, but I've learned to just ignore the crunchy feedback. (Never been an audible grind...)
That characteristic seems to be common among many of the 3rd gen trucks, so I'd just make sure the right fluid is in it and drive it. You've got 20k left on drive train warranty.

EDIT- Link to info on Motorcraft fluid:

My 17 manual transmission is a little ruff till it warms up, also likes to be up around 3k. I like the 17, but miss my 09.

I recommend to swap the trans oil with redline MT9O. It’s a better live that held smooth out shifts better. This trans has some quirks like 2nd gear takes a second or two to complete a shift ,. My 3rd gear also likes to be held against the gate because sometimes it will try to push the stick back out.

Change the trans fluid. It’s super simple on the manual, just drain it out and fill until it runs out the fill hole.

I’ve done mine at 30-50k miles using amsoil. Makes a very noticeable difference.

What transmission oil is used from the factory? Does changing to a different oil really make it that much smoother?

I relate very well to this love my 19 but cry every time I go to my friends house who I sold my 10 to and see it 185k miles of nothing but torture to her and she was still a pleasure to drive every mile of it

I changed my MT fluid to Amsoil synthetic just because when it's -30 C it was not too much fun shifting with the stock fluid. I don't think it made much difference in warm temperatures, I'd save your money.

It's a body on frame truck, not a Ferrari.

75w90 GL-4. Redline MT90 is very popular in Toyota transmissions.

Alright so it seems like it's definitely not just me. That's good, but also why would'nt Toyota just put a higher quality fluid into it in the first place lol.

Thank you everyone for the quick feedback, I will change it out and see how it operates. It's not grinding anything just not "smooth" all the time. I do find it likes the RPM's a little higher and will shift better. Love the truck though!

Have 18 sport with 16k miles. Luckily no issues with shifting, original fluid. Im very pleased with it actually. I do want to switch to mt 90 at some point though.

When its really cold out, it is a bit rough sometimes before it warms but thats all i noticed. Love this truck and this MT.

Hmm, I always felt my 2017 MT to be butter smooth unless I fuck up my shift. 50k+ and enjoying driving it daily.

I have found that rev matching helps quite a bit with the rough shifting. 1st to 2nd in these trucks is tougher than any other manual I’ve driven.

It very well could be just my shifting.. although I'd think it would be perfectly smooth no matter what unless of course clutch isn't fully depressed..
Just something to work on lol

Rev matching when up shifting is kind of pointless isn't it? I understand when down shifting a bit.. not sure it's kind of a new concept for me... do you guys rev match when shifting up and down?
