    Dustin,

I have quite a few questions as I diligently research wheel/tire/lift combinations. You seem to know your stuff here on TW with great recommendations. Quick question on the feasibility of your BMGs and 275/70-18s.

Truck is brand new and all stock...looking to do ICON coil overs (resis???) up front with Total Chaos UCAs, ICONs in rear with a custom built spring pack (OMD mod if your familiar). I'm building the truck as a daily driver and to run dirt roads, fast...kinda desert-ish. Looking for 3" lift all way around to handle the other off road stuff (and tire size). Truck will eventually be in Alaska doing all the sportsman stuff for me.

Wheels: Had it narrowed down to the Bronze SCS Stealth-6 (17")...until I saw your Bronze BMDs. Sharp! I Liked the BMDs over the 17" Konigs six-shooters...don't have a good answer why other than aesthetics.

Tires: Again, was living in the 17" world exclusively...looking at 285/70-17. I'm curious...given the ICON setup I'm planning, is running a 275/70-18 possible (toyo at2, duratrac, cooper st maxx or Kelly Safari tsr) without trimming the crap out of the wells? I think I'm safe with a 285/65-18 given what I've read in this thread since it's nearly same as 285/70-17. I'm just curious about the 275/70-18...haven't seen anyone running those or even talking about running them...little bit taller(~.5") but slightly narrower (~.25").

    Thanks,
    -Russ

That process sounds familiar. I finally settled on (it's installed) the Icon stage 4 with Dakar rear leafs. Had been looking at SCS, specifically the SR8, and then started looking at FN. The simplicity of the wheel is what got me. I'm more of the dirt road stay on the trail type too.

    Hi Russ,

    Great questions, thank you!

Sounds like you have a really good setup coming together, and you've really done your research. I'm glad to hear that you decided on our FN Wheels BFDs. I think you've made the right choice, and you won't be disappointed.

Regarding your question about tire size:

It has been my finding that any tire diameter over 32.7" tends to rub more on the over fenders and on the cab mount (aka body mount aka frame). As the tire diameter increases over that 32.7" threshold, the rubbing increases (irrespective of the width/offset/diameter of the wheel).

A 275/70R18 tire is going to give you a diameter that is greater than 33", and will almost definitely necessitate a fair amount of trimming of the plastic over fenders + a cab mount modification (aka body mount chop). The words "body mount chop" can be very intimidating, but it's a fairly simple modification, especially when performed by an experienced fabrication shop. The modification shouldn't cost more than $150 - $200 total, and it will be virtually indistinguishable once completed.

As you mentioned, 285/65R18 is generally a much safer tire size, and I know for certain that the rubbing with a Toyo Open Country AT2, 2"+ lift, and 18x9" BFDs is not excessive, and there should be no rubbing on the cab/body mount. Please note that not all manufacturers and models are the same, so please check the spec sheets for each tire before ordering, or feel free to check with me. I have spec sheets for all the manufacturers.

Thank you Sir Thomas More! Month end will be here before you know it! I'm glad you selected the FN BFDs too. I feel like our wheels definitely flow with the Japanese styling of Toyota trucks.

Thanks Dustin. 32.7"... THAT'S the magic number I have yet to see anywhere on these forums! Yes I realize it's tire specific...but that helps.

So most probable reason I don't see anyone running the 275/70R18 is what you stated...too much diameter = too much rubbing/trimming. I figured one of the other reasons was wheel diameters over 17" are just not that common on Tacomas...thereby reducing the number of people who have been experimenting with tire sizes. I think the (rather small) 18" wheel crowd has settled on the 285/65R18 tire size as the 16" and 17" wheel crowd has predominantly gone with 285/75R16 and 285/70R17 tire size respectively. At least that's what my month of research has indicated.

Good stuff...thanks for the info. I like to experiment so maybe I'll be one of the firsts to try the 275/70R18??? I have an extensive metal fab and composite structure background...so messing with body mount chop and fabbing on plastic/fiberglass is not an issue for me. Maybe I'll make my own carbon fiber or Kevlar over fenders??? Or maybe I'll just be Mr "play it safe" and go with a no- fuss bolt on 265/65R18. Decisions decisions...

    Cheers,
    -Russ

No problem Russ! Basically a 285/65R18 is the exact same size as a 285/70R17 or a 285/75R16 (the common / favorite sizes for Tacoma owners). A 285/70R18 would be like a 275/75R17 or a 275/80R16 - which are not common tires for Tacomas either.

With that said, I have had 5th Generation 4Runner customers install 275/70R18 on BFDs (4Runner fitment is very similar to the Tacoma), and they did not report excessive rubbing. I think you'd be fine with a body mount chop and plastic trimming (no need to fabricate custom over fenders).

You're definitely not the only one. If you're talking about the fender liner "nub" on Pre-2012 trucks, or the small flap on 2012+ trucks, it is common that you will rub on that small piece at the bottom of the fender liner, towards the front of the truck. You will rub with basically any wheel and tire if the tire size is 275/65R18 + due to the increased tire diameter. If you have a 2012 you can simply remove the two 10mm bolts holding on the flap. If you have a 2005-2011 Tacoma you'll need to trim that nub off with a sharp knife.

Please let me know if you need an illustration or any additional info.

Which ones? Please let me know, and I'll get you an answer right away. :)
