My whole life I drove beaters. I finally got a decent job making more than ever before, I decided it was time to get myself a nice truck. I bought a 2014 TRD sport 3 weeks ago and absolutely love it!

Coming home from work 2 days ago, I was in the left lane, going westbound and proceeded down the road, the slow lane was standstill traffic. As I am driving, some 17yr old kid decided to shoot out from a bank, across 2 lanes and and go eastbound. I slammed the brakes but ultimately hit him... Haven't even made my first payment on the truck yet, still had dealer tags on it =(

Fortunately when the cop showed up, he assured me I 100% had right of way and that the kid will be receiving a ticket for failure to yield. I just hope insurance doesn't play any games..

So now, with the insurance money I am thinking of possibly getting an aftermarket front bumper. I had planned on getting a bumper/winch setup eventually, but I was going to get a 3" leveling kit first. How bad / ugly would it be with an aftermarket steel bumper w/ stock suspension? Just at this time I cant afford to do everything at once, and obviously im gonna need a new bumper sooner than later.

My plan is finding a good body shop guy willing to work with me a bit and install the bumper for me while doing the rest.

You'll need some better/stronger coil springs up front to support the load of the new much heavier steel bumper.

I have seen plenty of trucks running arb or similar bumpers on stock suspension. Yeah, the front will sag a bit, but if you are swapping suspension anyways you may be able to pick something up used on the buy sell forum, and a new bumper. Bumpers usually have wait times though, so if you do that you may have to look at that damage for a while.

    Pay the truck off first.
Then worry about after market modifications.

You can do a steel bumper on a stock suspension but it will sag a little bit (1/4 to 1/2 inch). I would just do the best you can to break even on the new bumper and not worry about how it "looks" for now. As I said, worry about your loan before you worry about anything else.

ARB on my '13 DCSB without a winch dropped the front less than 1/4". It adds 131lbs of weight to the truck.

We are close so shipping would be cheap or you could swing by the shop and pick it up.

Like @jowybyo said, we are within driving distance which is a huge cost saver. Shipping is killer on these due to their size and weight. We are running a plate bumper this week, not a big deal to run a second so you could have it quick. Our bumper weighs 120lbs no hoops. Hoops add 28lbs if you go full hoops, 8 lbs for center only.

Life is no fun when your truck gets reposessed

I understand life is expensive and debt seems like part of life but it's never worth losing your truck.

He's very happy not driving a beater anymore, and I hope he never has to again.

That's not bad at all! Figure the stock bumper and associated hardware/crash bar is about 40 lbs which is removed.

You're right, he shouldn't have to drive a beater. I just think he should (hopefully) pay the note and add some mods. This way he doesn't have to wait months or years to customize his ride.

    Everything TW members recommend
I would go with @Mobtown Offroad 's bumper since they are the closest to you and they make good stuff. I have all three of their skids.

I and I betcha other NJDB's (thread here) can help you install it if you need help.

I wouldn't worry too much about front end weight. Net add would be about 90 lbs with hoops. Your stock truck can manage that easily.

When you add a future winch, skids and dual batteries. Then you should start thinking about the front end suspension upgrades.
