19 Tacoma TRD Grille swap - TSS error message? Anyone?

    Hello,

I got my tacoma just couple days ago.
    It’s TRD Sport 19 model.

I’m planning to swap my grille with TRD Pro grille at the shop 88 Rotors in El Monte, California.

The only concern for me is whether TSS radar system would work properly with this swap. (With garnish)

I’ve searched & read all the threads related to this, and got mixed feedbacks. Someone says there’s no problem, while others say they’re having error messages and malfunctions.

So, I’d like to ask your experience based on a more specific question.

“Is there anyone who’s having any problem with the Pro Grille swap w/garnish done by a shop?”
    (18+ OR Sport models.)

If so, how’s the shop reaction?
Do they put the original grille back?

At least 88 rotor guys said they’ve never had this problem.

Fyi, from my search it seems that proper installation and choosing the right garnish are important. As long as it’s not directly bought from the dealership, products (especially garnish) might be not oem. Sellers might describe/insist that they’re oem but most of them are replica. (Knock-off)
And some garnishes work okay but the others have problems.

For me, honestly, I don’t mind having replica as long as everything works all right. - now Toyota jacks up the price of garnish like crazy. The cheapest dealership I can find is $280. My local dealership asks $460. For garnish. I know some websites sell around $50-80, saying it’s oem. (But... as I said above these are likely not genuine oem under the current situation.)

In summary, I want to find a shop with experience and ask them to do the job. I want to know if there’s anyone having a trouble with shop installed grille.

Mine is stock height too, since I switch to 4runner TRD Pro wheel.

As far as I know, OEM garnish shouldn’t have any trouble. (Assuming installation is done properly.)

I watch some videos, and it looks relatively simple, but the realistic problem is getting OEM garnish is hard nowadays, unless spending around $300. (Only garnish itself.)

I can try different replica garnishes from different sellers. If I get lucky, I’d save some money but if not then I might spend way more than necessary.

So I want to hear about experience with the shop installation. (Usually shops seem to know which garnish works.)

Same set up for around the same time. The only time I had issues is when I didn't have the garnish. Once installed no issues.

Thank you. I saw this just before writing this and tried to get a grille from tacogaeage.com
It’s backordered. I’m just wondering there’s any shop that can have similar quality product / trouble-free service.
The tacogarage guy looks like he’s in vacation(?) and I could find some msgs that he’s not responding recently.

I want to do it locally (LA / Costa mesa) and also little worried about my installation skill when there's radar involved. (The other source of error message.)

I appreciate that you point out this thread. Should help others too. Demand for the good quality grille has been skyrocketed in my area. (SoCal)

Some people claim that they’ve got error messages. But so far, as long as you have proper garnish(whether it’s oem or not) and correct installation, there seem to be no trouble.

As long as you can avoid the counterfeit garnish, you should have no issues.

I have running4tacos grill with OEM garnish. I had a couple of issues after installation (PCS would turn off and report unavailable for no reason). This happened sporatically but has since seemed to clear up now and hasn't happened for a while now. I think the PCS re-calibrates itself over time so I'm hoping I don't have this problem again. Installation was super simple...anybody can do it!

I just put the cheapest garnish I could find on mine. I expected trouble and had my logic analyzer hooked up, ready to troubleshoot the RADAR sensor, or mill/polish the garnish, etc. No need. It works great.

I did add a shim to move the top of the sensor back by .004" to compensate for the 7.4" lower mount.

Do the retrofit correctly and there should be no problems.

    Rant:
It surprises me that a lot of people will buy an expensive phone and a high-tech vehicle, and yet they don't have an OBD-II interface to watch what the vehicle does on their phone.

I modded my wife's Subaru this weekend. Her entertainment / nav head gives her a complete operational report on startup, then switches to traffic/weather.

I'll do the Taco someday. I'm still learning what info I can pull from it.

So I guess you’ve not had a problem with TSS. I will order one. Thank you for the information.

Yes. OEM’d be the safest way to go for sure.

Also even counterfeits can work fine, as long as one gets the right counterfeits.

I haven’t done this so I’m not really sure, but as far as I know, if all instructions are done by right order, there shouldn’t be any trouble.

If there’s any little mixed up or small mistakes then error messages might show up first but these will go away as the system gets turn on/off.

If the problem is consistent (except heavy raining/snowing), then one can assume that either installation is largely problematic (meaning do it again properly) or garnish is way too bad. (meaning get oem / good replica at least)
