I love my Series I Kimber. My Series II that I owned had a few issues. I never trusted it. I'd love to have an Ed Brown and have come very close to buying one a few times, but as you said, its hard to justify.

Oh I know. I just thought it was a good way to explain the difference whan a layman is looking at getting a 1911. I'd probably tweek the list myself.

    I dunno about that either.

Rock Island is a solid brand, Armscor is a great company and Ivan, the president of Armscor, is fantastic. He has a history of personally handling any issues with their handguns on various 1911 forums and is known to give out his personal email address without hesitation to anybody with issues. Great guns at a great price point, and a great crew running the show behind the curtain over there.

Kimber is a shadow of what it once was, and is arguably the worst value 1911s I've ever owned. Certainly no Mercedes, maybe more like a Hyundai - looks better than it is, and doesn't underwhelm with performance but certainly isn't a finely tuned machine. At the price Kimber asks for their 1911s that is a shame. There are much better 1911s available in that price range, and for a few hundred more you can get a night and day different 1911 from a better maker and get an heirloom quality gun. Kimber is massively overrated.

Dan Wesson makes a fine pistol. The best? Not even close, but a super nice build that anybody would love to own at a price that reflects the quality you receive.

The layman needs to know only one brand - Springfield Armory.

Have seen a few Springfield TRP's floating around here. I have a few 1911's. I "had" a TRP at one time :(
Didn't want to do it but it was probably my only chance to get a higher end 1911 so I got rid of my TRP and
bought an Ed Brown Special Forces. You can really tell the difference regarding a cheaper 1911 and one of these.
Don't get me wrong I have a few cheaper 1911's and love every one of them but just wow.
Probably shouldn't be in here period as my addiction is bad and the GBA group might frown on this. :annoyed:

Agreed with this, for around the 1700-2000 dollar mark, the Dan Wesson is an excellent bang for you buck. Well that is the Valor and the Specialist. I own a specialist in duty coat, fit and finish is phenomenal. Dave Severn of Severns customs has an excellent review comparing the Valor to many higher end 1911.

I bought a Shooter Arms 1911 Commodore, it is made in the Philippines. I guess you guys would consider this a Yugo. However it shoots well and has never missed a beat, I would equate it with a Camry. Reliable and never had a misfire or any problem. I think I have about 1k rounds through it and 500 of those were on the first outing. Not to get into a pissing match but, I would bet that the Philippines has cranked out more 1911's than the US.

    Two things (not to flame):
    1) 1k rounds is not a lot, the difference between brands is in the first 50 (see below) and past 5k to 10k rounds. When I was shooting seriously, 1000 to 1500 was a typical month.
    2) Your gun may, in fact, be a great example of the design and run flawlessly for 100k rounds. The next serial number after it may barf on the second magazine and never run right. Alot of what you pay for with higher end guns in QC and consistency.

Getting off of the soap box, go buy a couple casses of ammo, join IDPA, USPSA, and shoot the snot out of that pistol :)

Not sure about that; they got kind of a late start. For instance, there were more than 2.7 MILLION 1911's made by US manufacturers for JUST the US military.

This is not my primary, I really just bought it because I wanted a 1911 and didn't want to pay alot for it. I primarily shoot CZ's or the copies of CZ's. I bet this gun doesn't see 5k rounds in the next 5 years. Basically the reason for around 1k rounds is so I can trust it if it needs to be used. I do this with all of my guns.

I used to do 1k each shooting session, no cleaning.

None of my 1911s failed except my Kimber TLE RL. Seems to be fixed now, under recall. Kimber sent it back with a rusty barrel.
