I typically change my recoil springs in my 1911's after about 1000-1500 rounds. I've actually had a factory spring wear out after around 500... All my replacements are Wolff. Sometimes light strikes are caused by the slide not being fully into battery due to the recoil spring being worn. Did your problem just start?

Gotcha, I plan on swapping the recoil spring with a Wolff spring very soon just for peace of mind. It started around 500 rounds, gave it a very thorough cleaning and the problem subsided for about 200 rounds then started happening with more frequency. Mags are feeding well and the feed ramp is slick/smooth as can be.

Good call on the replacement. I'd give the cheap spring a shot before swapping firing pins. ;)

Not a fan of overweight springs myself.

I'd stick a proper weighted replacement in for sure and see if it doesn't fix itself.

Nobody said anything about a heavier spring. Just a new one. ;)

Not doubting you, but I've seen tons of threads on 1911forum and arfcom recommending the Wolff springs as well. What would the pros/cons be going with a heavier spring versus sticking with a lighter spring weight? Trying to educate myself here.

    EDIT: Disregard...

Some background: I'm a custom gunsmith who builds and repairs 1911s.

The TI firing pin is preferred to a steel one, so don't change that. It's possible you have a damaged firing pin, and it's hanging up. It might also be an issue with the firing pin retainer. Check for wear marks.

Is the gun a series 70 or a series 80 with the firing pin block? You'll see a small plunger on the bottom of the slid in the latter case.

Recoil springs should be tuned to match the ammo you're using. 18# is a good default, knowing nothing else. Original spec was 16#, but that was for WW2 GI ammo.

The recoil spring is -not- there to slow the slide down from the recoil impulse, it's there to a) do the last 10% of that and b) return the slide to battery. The Main Spring, in h back strap, combined with the geometry of the firing pin retainer, are where most of the recoil impulse is absorbed.

I'd disassemble the slide and make sure the firing pin channel and spring are clean, then do the same thing for the main spring housing.

Next I'd look for other wear marks where it shouldn't be, particularly around the hammer.

    Then I'd recommend a gunsmith...

IMO, Springfield has the best customer service in the industry, and a lifetime warranty to boot. If you email them, they will instruct you on how to send it back to them. They will fix the problem, free of charge.

Probably a good spring set, pretty sure it's Wolff, as mentioned above.

You'll need to tune the seat spring to get anything out of it though.
