Hi; Here's an old photo of the second Toyota 4X4 that I owned, a 1984. This was taken in 1989, in a small town in Ontario where we lived, on our way to horse show. The 4 cylinder Toyota struggled with the trailer, but did it. The truck was completely stock, even the rims and tires. Ontario, Canada, is pretty unkind to vehicles in the winter, and a few years later I sold it for parts because of (guess what?) rusty frame. Haha. Still a big Toyota issue in the salty parts of North America.
I hope my new 2015 is as good as this one, though.

Man that looks like a sharp truck but it's actually older than 1984. 1983 and older

Shame it's gone, but you're right. Don't see many up North, I would imagine. There's a good handful running around where I live. But we aren't in the salt zone.

They never got the hitch system right in those years

Haha, the hitch system was a little folk engineering of my own. Farm welding 100. The truck was a 1982, my mistake when I posted it. When I hauled on the 401, I could barely do the speed limit, which was plenty fast enough with a horse on board. Everything was ticking hot when I got there, but it never burned oil or missed a beat the whole time I had it.

I my first drive off road in a Toyota 4x4, after years of using American 4x4 trucks, I was totally blown away with the quality of the drive components, and the balance between the front and rear drive trains. We take all that for granted today, but before the 80's, front axles and rear axles were never in perfect sync, and it affected off road performance. Toyota's changed all that with precision engineering and components, which meant it was almost impossible to get them stuck.
