I can't believe this hasn't sold. Please don't take it to the junkyard :( I'd take it off your hands and park it on my Mom's lot if I was 2,000 miles closer.

Try posting an ad on thesamba.com - bet it sells in a day.

Towable in its current state. Head gasket is blown. Everything is in place.

Thought about doing a go fund me and use it as target practice or for blowing up on video. Would rather it go to some one that could use it.

Guess I should have kept that trailer I gave away. Thanks for the reply. GLWS

Really surprised this didn't sell quickly.

Me too. If I was in California could have sold it ten times over already.

Jeez, sick deal. I had a westy and if I could do it all over again, I'd go the hardtop route. You can get the cabinets from a westy cheap, install better sink, stove, and fridge (which I did anyway in my westy). You can also get the rear folding seat from a westy and forget about the pop top. I'd say out of all the camping I did in it I only put the top up 1/10th of the time, and that was only b/c the chick wanted to. The back seat that folds into a bed is more comfortable. Plus once you put a roof rack and yakima box the pop top is a pain in the ass to lift due to weight and lower without pinching the canvas. Which is another pain/worry, having to replacing ripped or sun damaged canvas or leaks. You can stealth camp with a hardtop yet still have all the luxuries of a westy. Hell at 4% the cost of any westy that isn't rotted out you could buy this. Then redo the entire interior, do the Bostig engine conversion, have a next to new and reliable vanagon, and still be thousands under the cost of a dependable westy.

Would be a shame to scrap it. If I had any sort of garage or shed space I'd buy on principle alone.

Yeah, it's a great vehicle. I've camped in it and driven it cross country and it handles great. Always wanted one and did a vehicle trade for this one. I replaced the radiator and fine tuned the fuel injection when I got it and that was it. The water boxer engines are notorious for head gasket leaks and they all go before 200k miles. That's literally all that's wrong with this one.

The vanagons have a 50/50 weight distribution and 4 wheel independent suspension and handle quite well for a bread box design. I agree, the hard tops are the way to go, lower center of gravity and no canvas to replace. The engines are very simple to work on as well. It would be great to use one of the newer TDI turbo Diesel engines and get over 30 mpg. If I was better at working on engines I would just replace the heads and keep it for camping.

Have you looked into the Bostig conversions? They sell a very simple DIY engine conversion kit and it uses a Ford 2.0 engine commonly found in the Ford Escapes. You can get a brand new one cheap, and parts are pennies on the dollar compared to VW, Toyota, etc... I had one in my Westy and I could cruise 75 on the interstate easily. The van never struggled on hills and had plenty of "pep" for daily driving. That was a heavier Westy with a full yakima rack and box on the top too.

There is a guy in California that makes custom hitches that are beefy. I would throw my dirt bike on the back and I was set for pretty much anything. It carried the weight with ease.

I've read about the Bostig conversions. That will be something to consider for the next owner. I've moved on from my vanagon relationship.

Westy Ventures just move to Washington I believe. I knew him from when he was on the East Coast. Great guy, and he has done many conversions, build ups, and restorations. Last time I was at his place he was converting the interior of a non-westy to westy. I believe he is of the same idea that the pop top isn't worth the price. Even at $500-600 for transport, it'd still be a steal.

thesamba.com is a wealth of info on these older VW's.

Couple of great vanagon online parts places:

Yep, just brought the price down to under rock bottom of $500 to find a good home for it besides my backyard. Not interested in going lower, I can have it scrapped for that. Only wanting someone that could use it as a cheap resto project or needs the parts. Needs to be picked up. I can help load it in a trailer with my tractor if needed. Thanks.
