I purchased a 1985 22r pickup for the bed and axles. PO said it died on him while driving and couldn’t get it to run well again. Just for grins I’d like to see if the motor will run again. It has 98k miles on it. 7k miles ago it got a new timing chain and guides.

The symptoms are, extremely long cranking to get it to start. It will then run extremely rough if you stay on the throttle. I pulled plug wire laid it on the block and spark jumped about 1/2” seems like good spark to me. Looking in the carb while not running the accelerator pump seems to be work as it sprays a strong spray of gas. While its running rough I don’t hear any terrible mechanical noises. With the valve cover off and cranking all looks normal with the valve train, timing chain, and cam.

What would you guys check next ? Compression maybe? It seems to crank slower than what it should to me. Let me know your thoughts. I feel with 98k on it it’s worth trouble shooting.

    Thank you
