Here is the rear brakes on the 88 pickup i purchased. Just going back with original equipment. May upgrade the front brakes to a v6 model. This truck wasn’t maintained. Thank goodness it was a yota. IMG_3436.jpg

Not bad. A little rust on tailgate and passenger rear fender. The rest is pretty solid. Any place online to order OEM parts. In the past i have used Camelback Toyota.

I just hate to see Toyota Pick Up`s neglected .

Just be aware increasing caliper size might not clear those wheels.

I found that out the hard way!

McGeorge Toyota has a decent online Parts department.

Not going tow anything but a small flat bottom boat. Probably go back with original equipment.

I towed often with my 22Re 5 speed.

To me it was not a timed event ! I was told I was number 1 quite often I had no problems coming off hills in second or first gear.

Granted not the best Tow Vehicle But it got the job done.

wow, that photo in post #1 is unbelievable. I can't believe that those brakes would even work. Let us know how the rebuild goes. And post an after pic.

The mix of brake fluid. gear oil and brake dust when the old parts are removed and thrown in the scrap..

The backing plate will clean right off . some new paint good as new .

I have rescued a few like this.

I like Napa Ultra Premium Brake Parts about all I use on these older Trucks.

Looks like im replacing everything but backing plate. Who actually uses brake grease on this application? Does it actually help?

There are a few locations where you should put brake grease- on things like the threads for the adjuster, and where the shoes touch the backing plate.

For what it's worth if you haven't bought parts yet, I would suggest going OEM. I got Napa parts for my last rear brake job, and they felt very cheap compared to the OEM parts.

Did you go with the Ultra Premium line or the low end line to compete with Autozone and Advanced auto?

Napa was losing Walk in trade so needed to have a lower cost line to be better able to compete .

The shoes and drums were ok- it was the parts kit that felt cheap. The adjusters, for example, were made differently and thinner. The spring posts that hold the shoes in same thing- thinner. I reused the OEM parts and tossed the napa ones. In my case I was just hoping that it was the rear drums causing a vibration so I went with a lesser quality (than OEM) part. The OEM drums ended up out of round after a shop turned them. When I get the time, I'll go back at the rear brakes and replace them with OEM parts.

you can still get parts that old for an 88 Pick up.

Last time I tried I was laughed at.

I know you like to talk down all the parts counter people as being inept when it comes to old vehicles and all... But come on- you know those rear drum brake parts are the same on that 88 as a 2002, and only differ from the 2003.5 and 2004 in backplate design. Yes- while the parts sites might not let you select 1988, it's not hard to get things...
