Hey Guys, my 1999 California Tacoma Prerunner V6 Auto failed smog inspection, any smog techs hanging here or others that had/corrected sensor issues?
It failed on the HC and NO (bad) portions of the test. It has what looks to be a fairly new upstream 02 sensor, and I cleaned the MAF sensor. I dont want to start throwing money at sensors and Cat until i know whats wrong...no check engine lights....Thanks

There is not enough info for someone to give you sound advice on this.

First, do a full tune up: air and fuel filters, oil, spark plugs. Second, take a good picture of the readout the technician gave you and post it here.

Does your CEL come on when testing ignition ( key on , not running)? I'm in MA. and pretty sure we follow CA. emissions testing. If there is no CEL on we get a sticker. I you failed there should be that CEL on, I do believe. We'll need more info like he said, but if you supply it, you WILL get a resolution. Off hand I would say CAT may not be doing it's job so you need to supply odometer as CATs do wear out after 250,000 if they haven't been abused with oil or anti-freeze leaks.

Same in Arizona if lights on you fail. Or if there is any pending codes. They don't evening use the sniffer in the tail pipe for OBDII gas vehicles.

That CEL comes on ONLY because the system in in diagnostic mode and there is an incomplete monitor.

This is dependent on the car, and the equipment on that car. Its not just by year.

Wait, so the CEL light isn't supposed to come on when the key is in auxiliary mode? Most of my lights come on when I turn the key halfway, but all go off when the truck is started. I thought that was normal?

Need more info. Or you do. Even w/o a code if a system will not 'ready' you may not pass.

Lets hope that OP is not responding because he fixed the problem by paying the dealer $1000 to replace a gas cap.

I'm pretty sure any vehicles manufactured before 200 are exempt. He should check his DMV paperwork again...

Before 200 for sure its exempt. :D:D Here in Arizona it has to be older then 1968 to be exempt. The hit me every year for my 1972 4x4 3/4 ton chevy pickup.

You did read the thread title and see that he's driving a 199 right? I think any vehicle manufactured in the days of Ancient Rome should be exempt from CA smog check since the state wasn't even inhabited by westerners at that point... Lol

Guys he said it failed on HC and NO meaning dirty tailpipe.

2000 and newer don't get sniffed in CA, 99' older yes, and in some counties put on a dyno. They do check readiness monitors however on 99's, but then I'm assuming OP would of worded his post different.

As mentioned start with a full tune up, including oil change.

I know all about emissions, I got this thing to pass with a fuel cell, and no ref involved in the Bay Area.
