Less than a week to go. Cabinet restoration is mostly complete, next up is electrical. I have to wire up the 5v rail to control two of the backlit buttons, the 12v rail to power the marquee and coin acceptor backlights, and wire 120v power distribution for the PC and Monitor.

Biggest hurdle will be mounting the CRT which I’ll figure out later.

Actually the machine I have installed in the cab is a really capable gaming PC. It’s a Dell Optiplex 900-Series from 2012.

    • Intel i5 Quad Core 3.0GHz
    • 12GB DDR3 1333MHz
    • Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 4.0GB
    • Seagate 1TB HDD

First game I want to run on the emulator is Dig Dug, just to pay respect to the original game that was in the cabinet from Atari in 1993.

I’m replacing the old single 6x9 speakers with dual ones.

Fun Fact: These are the original rear speakers from my friend’s 1999 Honda Prelude. I told him I’d throw them away for him when I changed them this afternoon.

Little would he know they’re going to be in his new arcade cabinet.

They sound horrendous. But they work.

I knew a Galaga trick that would run the enemy out of missiles.

Dang, I hadn’t thought about that in decades!

Got the Dell monitor mounted up. I had to Sawzall a lot of the original cabinet bezel to allow for a platform for the CRT to sit on. I notched the Plywood so it could slide forward enough for the monitor to almost sit flush with the Plexiglass.

The CRT is mounted with a lag bolt in the front, and a piece of plywood clamping it down in the rear. I am reusing the original shelf supports from the cabinet for the platform.

This is the control panel. It had years of adhesive all over it. It took me almost two hours to remove it all with Goo Gone and paint stripper.

I then finished it off by sandblasting the entire unit.

Not pictured is a piece of sheet metal cut to size that will be riveted to cover all the old button holes. I’m starting fresh.

I plan to bust this out on Wednesday Night and Thursday Morning. I split my time between San Francisco and Hayward.
