I've been working on my 1995 Tacoma 2wd with the 2rz. I plan to replace the front wheel bearings. Rockauto sells an outer bearing seal but I see no indication for one in this schematic? I've had my front spindles off and there did not appear to be a seal on the outer side? Is mine missing? Possibly the outer seal only exists for the 4wd model?

43501L and 43502L are marked front seals in your schematic you posted.

Your schematic is for 6 lug.......5lug is completely different animal

it has axial bearings instead of 6lug/4x4 pressed in ones

    $10 vs $100....duh

5 lug uses an A3 outer bearing....
and there is no seal only the spindle cap holds the grease in

there is a big giant inner bearing ($30) and a large inner seal that goes with it

A3 should be repacked at least every two years.....because its a cheap tiny bearing....
I have bigger ones in my bicycle....

I'd replace inner/outer every 6yr.......A3 can be repacked in less than 15min/side once you get it down

When you cinch that bearing with the 30mm nut.....you have to do it like a headset on a bike......not to tight/not too loose..
    have to dick with it.....

These are weak bearings....not like the 4x4's......these need to be maintain
and only 1/tenth the cost.......and very much DIY'er

    5lug 2wd.jpg

This is your only outer seal...the cup

    CIMG5340.jpg

If you keep that outer greased up.....you wont damage the races
the 6yr bearing swap inner/outer will then take less than an hour

VS a $400 job plus labor on the 6 lug 4x4s

if you let the outer one get crunchy.....then you have to replace everything...both races and bearings and seals

If you cant learn to do this stuff your'selves.......all should sell their trucks
its really getting hard to trust others.......experts......as the earlier posts definitively show

Thank you, O'Silver. That was all the information I needed. I also have a '96 4Runner 4x4. I love it and love working on it for the most part. I am enjoying the simplicity of this little Taco though.

Aaahhh, I saw the op’s handle listing his 96 4Runner 4x4, after reading the original post I see he is referring to a 5 lug.

    DownBTW…..

couple things I encountered that might help you out

-took me three times to get bearing lock nut just right. I thought was good after 1st time. By accident, I had to take off front wheel, so much play, I thought I fucked new bearings up. Just make sure you re-visit bearing lock nut couple times so not too loose/not too tight

-putting/sliding inner bearing race/bearing on splindle…….1st attempts, would just not go on splindle shaft. I started lightly tapping, and stopped.
Called a race buddy, said to place race/cup and bearing in oven to expand. Ugh
Was a real mess bc bearing already packed with grease. But the heat worked, slid right on spindle shaft.
Only took 1day for house to stop smelling of hot grease!

In our crazy world the A3 has shot up about %50.......around $15 now

That Koyo inner took a nose dive.......I think I paid $28 ea 5 yrs ago from napa

    now look....

Wheel Bearing - Front Inner ATM 942 | Buy Online - NAPA Auto Parts

and I get the 10% AAA disc on top of that

If you let em get chewed up like CC's....you've got to replace everything...both sets/races.....what a PIA

every time you repack/replace that A3....run your finger nail along the race and feel for pitting
    .....should be like glass

sorry but that outer bearing is just plain weak........repack surely in the 10K~15K zone
the high temp wheel bearing grease is almost too thick.......it valley's real easy...so it ends up running dry...

havent seen the same on the inner one

IF you dont tighten down the 30mm enough......rotors rub calipers going slow around corners...

If you get too tight....you'll destroy both inner and outer bearings in double time.....because they are axial load ...and can be binded /deformed/ contorted....

in an impact world....50/50 chance of someone else doing it right
