Hello All, in my 2.4L I've changed; fuel pump, ignition coil, plugs, plug wires, cap & rotor, and fuel filter. When I crank, plug wires make sparks. Could it possibly be crank sensor if it produces spark? Took fuel press reading off of fuel press regulator, 7 psi. (downstream).

Removed new fuel pump to bench test; seems good - holds steady @ 40 psi even after power is removed. OBD II scanner says no codes pending, however CEL was on for past month; was running great, so didn't check for codes. A year ago CEL came on intermittently for EGR, but never came back.

Can't find a way to test fuel press @ rail, not sure what return fuel press should be.

Any and all help is great appreciated. Thanks

Does it run with starting fluid/brake cleaner down the intake? Is the spark strong? Are the plug wires on in the correct firing order?

Did it run before you started messing with it? What made you decide to start changing all that stuff? Have you pulled a plug to see if it is wet or black now from all the trying to start? I have seen people run a T in their fuel line to install a valve and also I have seen a banjo bolt with a valve on it to replace the stock bolt going into the rail. Those are a couple ways I can think of quick to get fuel pressure reading.

I started changing out all the components because I stalled out Tuesday evening driving home; starting w/ the coil, then changed fuel pump, then the rest.

It started to run poorly that night; it could idle, but stumbled heavily upon acceleration. Then after about 5 miles, it totally stalled.

When changing plug wires, I swapped out 1 for 1, so I pretty sure it's in the correct order. When pulling plugs, found them all to be extremely wet with fuel.

If it is the crank sensor, not sure if it would still produce a spark. Gonna try and remove vacuum line off of fuel regulator to see if diaphragm ruptured.

Thanks for help so far, and thanks in advance for further help in this frustrating problem.

Ok, I removed vacuum hose from fuel regulator, seems fine (no fuel coming out from diaphram). I pinched off fuel return line, and still won't start. starting to think it's not fuel. I do have spark. Took #1 plug out, has some fuel on it.

Funny thing, after putting fuel pump back in, w/ supply line not connected yet, almost started.

Not sure where to go from here...

You will still get spark if your crank sensor is on the frits. Your car will stall, or seem very unresponsive at times with a faulty crank sensor though. You did mention it stumbled under acceleration. Perhaps check the sensor itself. (Im not sure how to off the top of my head though.)

Thank you seanboy! that's what it was, crank shaft sensor! With all the new parts, runs like a champ

However, I do have to mention, upon removing sensor, couldn't help but notice 5 small 1/4" metal shavings on the magnetic crank shaft sensor. Engine making metal, (180,000+ miles).

Might be in the market for a rebuilt motor soon. Any suggestions?

Not a problem, thats what we are all here for. As far as the metal shavings, it could be from anywhere since the magnet picked it up. These Toyota motors go forever with proper maintenance, and sometimes without any!

I would just keep a close eye on it, not worry too much about it. She's got another 180K + miles to go. :D
