1995 Tacoma 2.7 Crank position sensor

    My truck has been dying appr. 20 seconds after cranking and I had a local mechanic check it with his diagnostic computer thing and he said crank position sensor so I ordered one and disconnected the battery and changed the sensor today (royal pain in the A) its under the alternator and behind a bracket .....well finally got it all back together and not it just turns over won't crank at all. Any ideas whats going on I bought a OEM crank position sensor.

    I mean I'm sure you've double checked, but the most likely would be something left disconnected

    there was only one plug on the end of the new sensor and reconnecting the battery. I did remove the alternator and unplugged it but that was easy nothing to mix up. I don't know what happened I guess tomorrow I'll re-install the old sensor but I sure hate to.

    It would be nice to know what code was tripped .

    Then you also need to remember when a code trips it is the whole circuit not just the sensor but the wiring and the ECM

    Just what brand sensor did you with.

    Did you get the correct one ? Plug might match but it could be wired wrong not working out of the box

    Code was P0336
    Don't know the brand just ordered part #90919-05016 -run the vin number to get that number.
    Plug was the same looked the same correct length bolted up the same.......wiring the same don't know something not right its not hitting a lick.

    What was the condition of the wires where they connected to the plug. Just wondering if you had a wire partially broken causing the fault code, then moving the wire around, pulling on it, etc during sensor replacement, you finished it off.
    You could check continuity from the plug back a foot or so and make sure the wire is not broken inside the insulation or at the connector.

    Update.....I think I've found the problem but it leads to bigger questions. Ok I'll try to explain what I've found. Took the new CPS back out for a comparison with the old. The new CPS has 3 wires at sensor and 3 wires at the plug (red,yellow and white I think) ok now the crazy part....the old CPS has 2 wires at the sensor(red & white) and 3 wires on the plug end(red white and black) but the black is cut and looks like heat shrink has been used to insulate the cut. So probably whats happening when I plugged up the new 3 wire CPS it grounded out is the reason the truck wouldn't crank. I put the old sensor back in and it cranked ok but has the same old dying problem after 15 seconds. If I slightly rev for 30 seconds the trucks idles fine and I've been driving it every day. I've got pics. any ideas what to do or why the black ground might have been cut?

    just looked at the old CPS again and thought why am I not seeing where the black wire is clipped on the sensor end? It's looks like the sensor end never had the black wire from the the plug end. Anyone ever seen a factory harness made like that?

    OME lift, 4x sliders, Demello rear bumper, custom front bumper, Engo 9000lb winch
    Sounds like your cps is working fine to me. The truck won't get spark at all if that's bad.

    It might be easier to access through the wheel well.

    It may be working I was just going to change because of the code reading p0336 that came up on the diagnostic reading.
