I am looking at purchasing a 1995 (actually 1995.5) Tacoma. The only thing I don't like about it is the dash. It looks like it is from the 1980's.
I have seen pictures of other 1995 models that had a much nicer looking dash. The tacoma I am looking at is the 2.7 4cyl regular cab and does not have a tachometer. Can the dash be upgraded?
Can anyone confirm that there is a "nicer" dash that could go in this vehicle?

Are you asking about the whole dashboard or just the instrument cluster?

This is the instrument panel that the vehicle I am looking at has:

And this is the instrument panel that I want:

Is it possible? It looks like the only major difference is the tachometer. Both pictures were out of a 1995 model tacoma.

Yes - you can swap a compatible tach cluster into a same-vintage Taco with no cluster.

'Compatible' varies with the particular model involved.

One thing is 'universal' - the donor cluster must come from a Taco with the same number of cylinders.

Does anyone know how to hook up the tachometer if the vehicle was not already equipped with one?

While I am asking, what would prevent the installation of the 2001-2004 dash? It looks the same as the "other" dash from 1995-2001.

Ok its got to be possible to put a 2001-2004 instrument cluster in an older tacoma. I just found this pic for the cluster located in a 2004 tacoma which is basically the same as the one in the tacoma I am looking at.

One problem that has been pointed out to me is that most (if not all) of the 2001-04 tacomas have a digital odometer. I imagine that would pose an issue since the one I am looking at does not have a digital one.

No - it's not (necessarily possible). You can't transplant the electronic instruments 'as is' from a 2001+ Taco into a 1995.5 - 1997 Taco with mechanical speedometer / odometer. Besides the obvious issue with the mechanical connections, there are wiring differences.

Hello, i need your help:) i just bought a 1997 tacoma 4cylinder and the dash cluster has no tachometer. Does anyone know if i can upgrade with one that has a tach? Or is it easier to just add a tach? Some of the lights in the cluster are out so im going to have to remove it anyway. I figure i should just upgrade the cluster.

    Please help!!!!!!!

I've tried looking for a 4 cyl 95.5-97 gauge cluster with a tach and can't find one I just got use to listening to the RPM's and shifting. I looked for a good while, found gauge cluster but all of them were from a v6 so they wouldn't work. I have the same problem with the lights being out I'm just going to replace them when I have the chance.
