1995 Tacoma with 22rze engine overheating.

    Defrost mirrors, compass/temp display rear view mirror, rear wiper on camper shell, trans.cooler.
    One test for a bad head gasket.
    Take off the radiator cap with the engine running.
    If you only see coolant circulating, all is well.

    If you see bubbles pulsating up to the surface you probably have a bad head or gasket.

    Dd you notice any sweet smell in the cab?
    You may have a bad heater core.

    Wharever the leak is, weather steam is evaporating or leaking on the ground. You need to find the source before throwing money at it.

    Hello All, well after a lot of screwing around, a new shop told me that yes, my head (on the truck) was indeed cracked. Couple of options basically, remanufactured head or another engine. If doing the head, they recommended timing chain and guides as well. I know you don't NEED to do that but the truck has 385k miles and I intend to keep it for a long time. With labor it was going to be about $2k. I decided to go with a remanufactured long block. Like I said, I love my old Toyota and I live in Oregon so nooooooo rust. So I had the reman engine installed along with a new radiator. Total cost was roughly $4k. The engine runs great and I'm a happy camper. I don't care about having the latest, greatest vehicle. Just want something that is reliable. Taking it in the transmission shop (great local business that has been around for 60 years) next week to have the pan pulled off (it's never been off) and have the broken teeth and filings shoveled out ( :) ) and generally checked over. Thought I should follow up with folks. Thank you everyone for your input!
