Any help would be appreciated. So we had a bad snowstorm over a week ago and my 1996 Tacoma with the 2.7 - 4 cylinder started running funny. It will start cold and run great for about 2 minutes then it loses power/ idles down and eventually dies. If you try to accelerate and keep running it starts backfiring really bad and pukes out. I replaced the fuel filter thinking it was the problem and I also took the Mass airflow off and it looked clean but sprayed carb cleaner on it to clean it to make sure. I had a check engine light on before this and now the check engine light went away also. Think that was a bad oxygen sensor but not sure.
Not sure what it is or can be but am getting frustrated working on it. Thanks ahead of time for any help anyone can give me.

Is there a easy way to do that?

Get yourself a bunch of WD40 and HOSE DOWN EVERYTHING electrical under the hood.
I don't know much about the 1996 configuration, does it have cap and rotor? If so, that would be where I'd start with the WD40. Just soak the hell out of it.

Explanation: Wet and salty makes everything short out.

Should it show check engine if the EGR valve is bad? Or will it throw a code even if check engine light is not on if I hook it up to a code reader?

Stick your finger under the valve or hook up a vacuum pump and make sure the valve moves freely and isn’t frozen open or closed

Ok if I get time today I will take it off and try that. There are several different lines going into it I think. Will try and figure it out looks fairly simple to remove as long as I remember or mark all the lines to go back in the same spot. Lol

You may not have to remove it to check its operation

Have you tried the WD40, you really should give it a try!

You might want to look up where the W and D in WD40 come from. That will give you a good hint about what its purpose it.

I tried the Wd40 twice and did not work. Changed the EGR valve out also and still did not work. Figured as long as I had it out might as well put a new one in, there was (water/antifreeze???) in the lower hoses when i pulled them off. Not sure if that means anything. Gonna get 2 new O2 / oxygen sensors and try that next i think. After that maybe fuel pump???

I bought a new one and replaced the old EGR valve as long as I was messing with it figured I would just put a new one in. Did not fix the issue?? But there was water in the lower lines when i pulled them off not sure if that is suppose to be or not.

Thanks for all the help. Got it fixed today. Changed out both oxygen sensors and all is good. Runs good again. So one of the oxygen sensors must have been bad and causing the issue.
