I'm in need of some help. I have a 2.7 1996 Toyota with 33x12.50x17 mud grapplers with less than 100 miles and a manual transmission with 190,000. I had 31x10.50r15 BFgoodrich ko's with 15 inch mbs. I put the tires up for sale and bought new rims and tires. The rims are bigger but I also switched over to aluminum. I had problems when I would shift into first, second, and reverse. I'd have to put a lot of force into it. I thought I had to regear for the nittos but I was told by mechanics that it could handle it. My truck was idling in my driveway for about 20 minutes and when I got into leave and it had trouble when I wanted to take it. It's like it wanted to turn off so I had to give it gas and then it'd go. I drove for 3 miles, cut it off, and left it alone. The next morning, I went to turn it off and the car started making a really loud grinding noise coming from the transmission. I got my brother to pull me up a hill and let me roll down to pop the clutch. I was at about 8 mph and I went to pop it and all four tires locked up. I thought it was the starter so I took out the starter and tested it at oreileys. The starter is fine. I looked through the motor and it looks like the flywheel is jammed. All of the studs visible have been shaved off. Can someone please help me find my problem?

Pull the transmission! If you see studs shaved off somethings wrong. If you have to force shifter, the first thing I would check is clutch and pilot bearing.

I had the same symptoms on mine. I could only put it in gear when the truck was off. When driving though, I could not shift into another gear. Took it to the shop by driving it in 2nd gear through side streets. Mechanic told me that one of the springs on the clutch disc was off. Put in a new clutch kit and a new rear main seal, and it shifts smooth. Clutch pedal feels super light too. Almost too light.

You were in 4wd? No way the fronts would lock if you were not.

Curious why? Starter shouldn't have even been engaged for a push start. Just the key turned to 'on'.

I think you found it already. Not quite sure what studs you are looking at though.

So can you disengage the clutch or not? Is the master full of fluid, and the slave in working order? Do you know when the clutch was replaced?
