Okay so I’ve been working on this for a long time now and am out of ideas. Truck is a 1996 Tacoma 3rz that I manual swapped a couple years ago with the auto ECU. Chasing a couple codes I had, I decided to swap everything in the truck over to manual. I got a parts truck and swapped engine harness, dash harness, and in the process cut out factory toyota security system, and an aftermarket remote start (which was all wired into the stock dash harness so as of now there is nothing aftermarket in the truck). After doing this, the left rear turn signal stays lit constantly, oil like and high beam indicator stay on constantly, no respinse when turning ignition on, wipers come on with left turn signal switch, and if I turn high beams on they flash like turn signals. Truck will crank but no start. I’ve checked the ground on the manifold, the ground that goes to the firewall on the back of the engine, all 4 grounds on the dash harness, and swapped the engine bay lighting harness with the fuse box and everything with no change. Only harness that’s original on the truck is the bed harness that goes from the cab back to the tail lights. Any help is appreciated, have scoured the internet on this issue for awhile now with no luck

Sounds like a bad ground somewhere. There’s a lot of grounds on the truck, could be that you missed one.

I’m sure it’s either a ground, or shorting ignition power somewhere. Just don’t know where that could be since I’ve replaced just about every wire on the truck.

Do you have a wiring diagram? I would go through each of those incorrect lights and see where they're getting their power. Hopefully you'll find a pattern.

Unfortunately I don’t have a diagram, and no money currently to get into TIS

Somewhere here there is a link to a download of some manuals. I'd look but I'm in the middle of removing the beach that has accumulated in/on my truck.

Alright so I figured it out about 2 weeks ago, have been too busy driving it and working and keep forgetting to post. This was the stupidest easy thing ever that has no posts that I’ve found. If you ever have the under dash fuse box out or unplug anything for whatever reason, these 2 plugs use the same connector and can be plugged into the wrong spot. Hate that it took me almost a year to figure this out because I assumed toyota would make all the connectors unique and never even thought about this possibility.

Dude that's awesome to hear!!! Well I mean awesome it was so easy to find for you by the end. But I hear ya on the long time frustration but that's great to hear it's up and running  So this was an auto to manual swap? Not too hard having the donor truck or still a bear?

Congratulations on completing your swap. That had to be a mountain of work.

Designer thought the color coding was good enough to prevent the accidental swap. They save a lot of money by using the same shape connectors. Not agreeing with the situation, just explaining why it is that way.

Yay! And not to worry. We have all had that "DOH" moment. I'm glad you got it solved!

Well it’s just now getting “fully” completed. I’d been driving for a couple years with the auto ECU with resistors and crossed range switch wires but kept getting big lean codes and would rev past 4K RPM. Was getting no voltage from front o2 on the scanner but could pick up voltage at the scanner using a DMM. Long story short, my auto ECU was corroded from getting some water in the cab from a river crossing back in high school, guess the humidity inside the truck for a couple weeks burnt up the wires for o2 signal and coolant temp. The guy I got the trans from years ago had also given me an ECU and an engine harness so I grabbed a donor truck that didn’t have an engine and just swapped the whole interior over. Turns out the manual ECU was corroded too, kept throwing battery voltage failure codes for memory. Got a mint condition 1996 MT 2.7 ECU (SCORE!) off eBay and the truck is running better than it has since I’ve owned it, minus a stuck open EGR that’s probably been open the whole time. Pictures of the corroded MT ecu attache

It’s not that it was hard necessarily, I did the trans swap when I was 17 (22 now) and I was able to figure out which wires to cross to make it run by myself. My big issue was persistent lean codes and open loop control codes that ultimately ended up being a bad ECU (which is just about the last thing I’d expect to be bad on a toyota). I ran on all the auto electronics for a long time, only just recently swapped everything over from a base manual donor truck. Lost my power windows and locks, but oh well it’s a beater truck for a reason.

Dude that's awesome technical picture man! That's a great resource for the forum. Freaking sweet dude I'm glad you found that! How did you find that it was corroded? Like a last resort? I've already triple checked every else might as well see how the ECU looks? Awesome diagnostics man:cool:

Well everything I have read said that toyota ECU’s are rock solid and that they never go bad so I always assumed mine was good. Once I swapped to the MT and got the battery voltage code I got irritated and back probed the BATT+ pin and was getting 12.3 volts so I knew it had to be internal. I’ve re-soldered clocks and TPS’ before but this was too far gone. Took my old auto ecu apart and sure enough same thing.

    That whole co
That whole corner of the board, and even the case itself, look like the moisture affected them. Good job diagnosing it. Glad your truck is running good.
BTW, you may want to take the ferry next time you cross that river :)! Just kidding, sounds like your getting some good use/fun out of your truck.[/QUOTE]

Holy crap, I missed the age. Now don't get all big headed from my compliments......kid.
Seriously though that's a great grasp you have of the way the systems all work and stuff. Nice job

Exactly! I beat it up every day, won’t hesitate to cut on it or modify it and it just keeps on trucking. They value it at like $200 for property taxes so it’s super cheap to keep around lol

Thanks man, been a Honda tech for about 4 years now doing diag and engine/trans work. Also helps that I’ve had just about everything out of this truck at one point or another, and some things multiple times (damn dash harnesses!)
