1996 tacoma 4cyl mass air flow meter

    Hey guys, Just joined and am reposting in a more appropriate forum. The mass air flow meter is failing on my 96 tacoma 4cyl 2.7L. After cleaning it, drivability greatly improved. When the weather drops into the low 50's it gets sluggish and lacks power. I suspect the thermister wire on the MAFsensor isn't working right. I can only find remanufactured module/housing units for $300 to $800! My truck was built before August 96. On trucks built after August 96 (even up to 2010) you can buy just the module(the electronic sensor) brand new for about $125. A used part comes with no guarantee to work and varies widely in price. A few hundred bucks isn't too bad to get things running right, but I don't understand why I cant get a brand new module for the trucks built in these few months of 96. By the way, I've already replaced the air temp sensor, the coolant temp sensor and the throttle position sensor. The real improvement came after cleaning the MAF. The wire connections seem ok also.     Hey Ben, Thanks for the reply. The last picture looks closest. Mine has Three wires and the numbers on it are 22250-75010, AFH70-09, 6426. The aluminum housing looks like mine. Again, I don't understand why just the module isn't available for my truck. But, hey , whatever it takes to get it back to running normal. Steve

    That figures, because it is the most expensive of the three. I have a few questions for you. Is your truck OBDII or OBD? You should have a connector under the driverside of the dash and be black if it is an OBD II truck. It looks similar to this (only black)

    My truck is OBDII. It hasn't thrown a code yet, but I've just systematically narrowed it to the MAF. When I clean it with CRC brand MAF cleaner it runs great for about a week and then starts to run poorly again. It only takes 5 minutes to clean, so thats what I've been doing the past several weeks. Our weather has been dropping into the 20 degrees. When its in the 60's and 70's I don't have much of a problem. Steve

    Here is a remanufactured one that is supposed to be for your vehicle. It is $289 (including core chrage of $32) at www.rockauto.com

    Hey Ben, I just ordered the the MAF from SIA electronics. For under $150 I'll at least have a second module to play around with. I didn't know if it was a brand new or rebuilt unit, but I need to start somewhere. Like I said, the used parts out of old trucks ran from $75 to $300. Thanks for your input. Steve

    Well, I called the company and they said something about a delay in shipping due to year end inventory. They shipped it Next Day Air at their cost and it arrived the day before Christmas. Popped it in and the truck runs great. Haven't had it in long enough to verify the milage is back to the normal 25+ mpg ( it dropped to 20- mpg with the old cleaned mass air flow meter). I'm happy with the smooth acceleration and better power up hills. Thanks for everyone's input.
