    Good afternoon,

    I was curious if I can swap a 2001 Tacoma engine 2.4 or 2.7 I believe into a 1996 Tacoma with a 2.4?

Will they swap in without issue?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

You will have an issue. The 96 2.4 has a distributor where the 2001 used coil packs. If you swap the motor you will need to swap the ecu and harness along with a few other things.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Then once you have the newer engine with ECM and Engine Harness you still need to merge the ECM and the Cab harness .

unless you buy the complete donor vehicle the needed 4th plug for the ECM most often stays with the vehicle.

Would this be considered a issue?

It sounds like replacing a 2.4 with a 2.4 is what you need to do

Direct swap would be the vehicle you have now your 1996 Tacoma 2.4
runners are different enough to cause some repinning of the wire harness

What is the reason for the swap in the first place. I seen no mention of what is wrong with your current engine?

I am swapping the engine for a guy I know. He said the head gasket is blown and he already attempted to replace the headgasket and apparently he failed at it and the gasket was still blown. He said there was still coolant in cylinder 1 and after 300+k miles he wants a new engine.

ohh and right now the head is off and the engine is in pieces so he asked me to swap a motor in for him. I am attempting to find a replacement but they appear to be rare. I found a guy saying he has a 95 2.4 and a 97 and a 2001 engine from a Tacoma.

The 95 will work plug and play. The 97 could be distributor or coil they changed it mid year. The 01 will just be more work.

Also if you have the old motor apart check to see if the head is cracked, it happens a lot. That may be the issue not the head gasket.

If you don't know maybe you should pay someone who does?

    Or any of these?

I got a 96 Tacoma with a 2.4 would any of these motors be a direct swap?

Know what? Internal combustion engines? These I know well. I am attempting to buy a direct swap engine from a guy on marketplace. I am looking for help identifying if any of these engines are direct swap. As far as performing the work itself I’m 1000% sure I can do it without an issue. I have swapped many many engines in my life just looking for clarification before I buy something that causes me a headache.

If you knew what you were doing you wouldn't be asking if a carbureted or v6 engine would work as a direct swap.

Ohh I see because of the pictures earlier. Yes I didnt mean to post the v6's (my mistake) and honestly I didnt catch the carb on the other one. Its pretty early and I haven't had my coffee.

So what about the other engine in the photos above? Is it the same as the 96 2.4? It appears to be a 4 cylinder with EFI.

    No, it's the wrong engine.

You need to search for a 95-96 2.4 2RZ. That is the only direct swap.
