I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 2.4 4 cylinder with the A43D. Just purchased the truck to be my new work truck. Truck run and drove fine. Was doing a tune up and while I nthe middle of it I tried to move the kick cable out of my way and it was so rusted that it separated into 2 pieces. Does anyone have any information on how to change the kickdown cable? I know I'm going to have to drop the tranny pan but hownfar do I actually have to go and do i need to drop the tranmy complete to preform this change out @gearcruncher thanks for the help guys!

All you have to do is drop the transmission pan . The transmission does not have to be removed

You probably want some pictures of what the cable looks like once you get the pan off` ?

That cable is not a kickdown cable . it works in conjunction with your throttle . The cable tells the transmission how much load you are placing on the transmission .
If` you drive` with the cable disconnected , you fry your transmission very quickly
With this said , the proper adjustment is made with a pressure guage connected to the transmission and the engine running , however you can get close with the engine turned off and cheat without the use of a pressure guage
If the cable is too tight , the transmission will take a very long time to shift and when it does shift , its going to be very aggressive
If the cable is adjusted too loose , the transmission is going to shift very early and the shifts are going to be very soft to the point where the transmission feels like its slipping. Tighten the cable up asap . Do not continue driving if the trans is slipping
Over the years , the cable does stretch a little causing soft shifting and slipping .
Its a good idea lubricate and adjust it every year .
It`s just a cable . Once` you get the pan off , its pretty straight forward . There are a couple pictures in this thread

Might as well replace the filter and pan gasket while you are there .
I suggest ordering a gasket and filter and some fresh fluid before you dive in .
Before you begin , spray penetrating fluid on all your pan bolts to prevent breaking bolts .
This is an easy job as long as you have a big catch pan to get all the fluid .

Thank you so much for the help. I went ahead and ordered the gasket, filter and the gasket for the filter. I also picked up about 6 quarts of tranny fluid, I figured the pan held about 5-6 quarts. I'm in the military so I'm gonna alot and home a week here and there. I will let you know how everything goes. Once again thanks for the advice! I'll keep you updated on how everything turns out.
