I tried to start my Tacoma yesterday and initially the starter would not engage (nothing happened when I turned the key). I tried to start it about 3 times and nothing happened. My radio and lights did work at this point though. About the fourth time trying to start it, it fired right up. Does this sound like a starter going bad, or something else?

    Thanks

Search for how to check and replace Toyota starter contacts. It's a common problem, cheap to fix, and you don't need to gamble on the quality of an aftermarket starter.

Check for other things first, like corrosion on the battery terminals.

It can also be a poor ground problem as well

No problems with the charging system that you are aware of ??

You don`t mention auto or manual I have had the clutch safety switch not close because the clutch is not pushed in as far as needed .

Move in the seat foot pushes the clutch in just enough it starts

The battery is new, so unless the alternator is bad i would sway away from the charging system. I'm going to check the ground though. You bring up a good point about the clutch, because it is a manual. I can start starting it in neutral with clutch assist on to see what happens.

At this point on leaning towards the starter, more specifically the contacts in the solenoid. It starts right up most of the time, but sometimes it takes a few tries. Kind of seems like a connection issue.
