Well referring back to the steps. You've done step 2. I think it's time for step one. You don't need an oscliscope, the scantool with live data will show the same thing.

Just about anything will work well with an older toyota. I like the autel brand or you could keep an eye out for an older snap on unit.

Make sure the manual is with it or avalible on line. Scan tools while similar are not all the same and the function that you are looking for will not be where you will expect to find it in their menu system. The better ones have a search feature and you will have to try differernt words and see what is revealed. You will want something with RPM. The probelm with that is that some scan tools shutdown when cranking and others will show cranking RPM. If there is a cranking RPM then you can be sure that the crank sensor is working. The best feature IMHO, is graphing. A line graph is instantly understandable whereas a screen of changing numbers isnt.

You should be aware that there are 2 basic modes of operation, OBDII and manufacter specific protocols. Manufacturer specific is where you enter year, make model, engine, etc etc. Keep this in your mind... lots of times the readings are "interpreted values" meaning that this readings are from tables stored in the PCM and are not actual live data, this is the lie part. Alternate between Generic OBDII and manufacurer specific and use some common sense. If the engine coolant temp says it is -40*F and it is 70* outside, fix that first.

I got the scan tool from another friend... A basic one...
I see some live data...but not the crankshaft or cam sensors.
i can see the TPS sensor is working correctly....

    What to check next...

Should we check to see if coil packs are working correctly...???
    See video link...

Does the scan tool show crank and cam sensor data? That's what you're looking for. Crank it over and see what it looks like, you can compare to what's in the manual that I sent you.

Again, same boat here. My situation is different. At least you've identified you're not getting spark. Don't give up. The truck I'm trying to fix is getting spark, and fuel (plugs wet) but still not starting. I'm going down the path of "improper" fuel now (bad injectors, dirty, leaky, etc.), but I'm curious as to what you find regarding your spark troubles. I'm mostly lost too, so thanks for posting about a no start problem.

    Latest update..
Removed the ECU and sent in to www.upfix.com to get checked and/or repaired..
Came back with 1. Circuit board issues 2. Codes cleared 3. Capacitors replaced.
Tested and sent back to me in perfect working condition..
    Installed ECU today...

Still no start, cranks over and over but no start up...
Checked OBD port.. No error codes..

Finally got my hands on a nice expensive scanner tool with LIVE data...

No RPMs on the scanner tool live data..

I did replaced the crankshaft sensor with new one about 2 weeks ago, but it wasn't an OEM Denso brand..
I've read OEM is the best way to go with these parts. I just ordered a new crankshaft position sensor but
this time its an OEM Denso Brand..

Lets see if i get Live Data RPMs after i install that one..
    Will report back...

Just to update everyone on what has been done..
    97 tacoma 3RZ-FE 4x4 5Speed 2.7L

Cranks No Start with No spark..
    Replaced Camshaft sensor
Replaced Crankshaft sensor (Denso brand coming soon)
    Replaced TPS sensor
    Replaced MAF sensor
    Checked ALL grounds
Checked 12v power and ground to both coils
Sent ECM to get checked and repaired..They replaced 5 capacitors inside ECM
All fuses and relays seem to check out.

Fuel pump turns ON in Live Data when cranking.
All sensor wires trace back to the ECM are good
ECM has good ground and 12v
ECM still doesn’t see crankshaft sensor
No RPMs on the scanner tool live data
