    Long story short.
Everything was fine prior to the right side trans cooler line braking from the radiator last night. I heard it happen while I was in a parking lot waiting for someone to get a parking spot. Once the person parked gave it a little throttle and had no go.
So replaced the line today refilled transmission with Toyota aft and it slips ridiculously now. 3 - 4000 rpm to get the truck moving from a stop.

anyone have any suggestions on what might be the issue. And what I can do to fix it.

98 Tacoma sr5 2.4 auto transmission column shift. 160000 miles

you might consider using friction modifiers....

    there's many available......

I have exact same tranny.....I've been using this....

    https://www.lubegard.com/products/red/

But you might need something with more friction....
    dont know alot about this...

the lubeguard was recommend in another thread here....

Lucas has two products a conditioner and a slip eliminator....

Been using the lucas condition when I switched from the toyota fluid to valvoline max life to help the transition to the synthetic ..... and have never had a problem....only recently switch to lubegard because they said its safer for the engine....lucas use acidic additives...

Also mine is 98 column shift and 160K

Something weird happen to me....somehow my tranny went into some kind of emcy limp mode....would only go down road 10 mph and would not upshift....
pulled in a parking lot...turned everything off....restarted engine ...and it ran fine...
Maybe you need a hard reset too.......disconnect/ reconnect battery...reset everything...see if that does anything

also mine is real sensitive to that speed position cable going from the throttle body down to the tranny...if it gets twisted or binding bend...my tranny immediately starts having problems upshifting......routing around the stainless headers was kinda tricky...

As stated in original post taco has 160k. I did tow it home. Fluid level has been checked multiple times both hot and cold. And fluid levels are in a acceptable range.

thanks for the reply the strange thing for me is it shifts smoothly but slips getting to that point. I drove it very softly for about 30 minutes around my neighborhood to get it hot to check the fluid and make sure levels were good it felt fine and didn’t slip at all until I pulled out onto a main road and tried to softly accelerate faster then 10 mph. I was looking into the Lucas, but I’ll check out the lubegaurd as well.
    thank you.

Ive personally only owned the truck 5 months although it was family owned for the past 9 years. Transmission was last serviced at 120k and never showed any signs of any issues.

currently weighing my options. Looking at rebuilt transmissions. Hoping that some slip fix will help as a temporary option in the mean time.

If you believe that there is a miracle in a bottle I have a bridge to sell you.

Nothing replaces good preventative maintenance to include automatic transmissions.

It may be just torque converter.......toy trannys, some of them last forever...
especially since you just had it serviced....
their TC not so much....lots complaints about shuddering at lights...
    including mine....at about 150K.....

that lube gard sells an additive just for the TC shuffle...
I may give it a go...........Its easy for someone else to say -
    JUST CUT THAT BITCH OUT...

But yeah you need some alternatives.....not a bunch of parrots...that state obvious...

maybe visit some of the parts store....catch some experience day workers...old guys..

I hope that you didn't take offense. Transmission piston seals, clutches and valve seals wear. Keep an eye out for a decent transmission and place it to the side covered up.

Sorry , but I have to ask ........You are checking the fluid with the engine running with the truck in park ? Doesnt matter if the transmission is hot or cold if the engine is not running .
If you check the fluid with the truck shut off , the dipstick will show incredibly overfilled because the transmission pump needs to be turning to achieve a proper level .

If you are checking the fluid with the engine running and the transmission is warm , please disregard the above question .Many people make this mistake
Let us know and we can help you diagnose from that point forward

So when this happened .... how long did you idle between that sound and when you tried to pull forward..
how long was the tranny pump pumping out its all to the ground.....mine takes less than a minute if you discount whats left in the torque converter....

Did you get lights//codes.....any chance you scan for stored codes.....that werent flag on panel..

Idled for probably a minute. Once I noticed my truck didn’t move I immediately shut it down and just rolled it out of the way in neutral. No codes or anything popped up.
Upon fixing and refill it took two quarts.

I have checked the fluid both with the engine off and on but when I was referring to check the fluid truck was on

I suggest. Double checking your fluid level with the truck running in park 1 more time for good luck .
Always check both sides of the dipstick . I still think you are very low

Yeah that's a good catch.....Its hard to get everything saturated again....
Mine full is somewhere close to 9qt........
If I let it sit....stick a vacuum tube and pull everything out of the pan..
I can only get slightly less than 2 qts out..........
    leaving 7 qts.....somewhere in there......

And dont have to lose much either for complete stop....found that out

    Slipping transmissions
    1. Check the fluid level
    2. Check your transmission temperature.
    3. Perform a manual flush provided the transmission fluid is dark red and smells burnt.
    4. Change out the transmission filter if you haven't done so.
    5. Top the transmission off and move the transmission select lever from D to R and back to D to help remove air within the transmission.

If your transmission is still slipping I would limit driving it until you either diagnose the problem or change the transmission. This is coming from a guy who has experience with transmissions.

So I ended up Draining all the fluid to check to see if I had the appropriate amount of fluid which I did. Ended putting in a bottle of slip stop and replacing the fluid while waiting for the new trans to be delivered. It seemed to help with very little issues and just some time to get me point a to b in the mean time. Trucks back to 100% with the new rebuilt transmission.
