I have a 2.4l 1998 tocoma sr5. I had my spark plug fly out of my head. How do I go about repairing this?

I have already tried putting the spark plug back in and it just spins in place. Clearly it is stripped but I don't exactly know what routes I should take after this.

    Tacoma, not Tocoma.

So the threaded hole itself in the block is stripped, or is the spark plug broken inside the head?

The hole for the spark plug is stripped and the spark plug pop right out onto the road

How’d you manage to strip the threads?

    4 run, 2 don't
    Helicoil.

Spark plug blow out happens on those older Ford 5.4's

Defrost mirrors, compass/temp display rear view mirror, rear wiper on camper shell, trans.cooler.
Ask for a Heli Coil at an auto parts store.
It will screw into the head into the damaged threads and stay put with Locktight on the threads. Then the Sparkplug will fit just like normal.
The tricky part is if the hole needs to be enlarged, you have to vacuum/catch the metal savings.
    See YouTube for demos.

I had this exact same problem on a 2000 BMW 540i. Spark plug just blew out on it's own and the heat/gas from limping it stripped the threads.

I did a lot of research and wound up paying something extra for a product called "time-sert" which is like a heli coil but it comes with the specific tools you'll need (a tap, for instance). It worked great, wasn't hard to do and lasted a couple years before I sold the car.

Edit: I mean it still worked when I sold.

Darn gotta say stripped holes are among the things I hate working on the most, and doing it in a sparkplug hole is probably one of the most pesky ones to work on haha.

Personally haven't had to rethread a sparkplug, but found this video very helpful for fixing strips in general if you haven't looked up any yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3irFj2XeCM

I've heard a lot of good things about time-sert.

Buy the time-sert, watch a few videos until you feel comfortable with what you're doing and you'll be good to go. Whatever the case, be very careful not to leave metal shavings in the cylinder after performing the repair.
