My truck is a 1998 Tacoma, V6, with TRD package and Limited trim. It has 96,000 miles on it, is in excellent shape, and I've been carrying Collision insurance on it. I drive the truck between 1,000 and 2,000 miles each year.

If I stop the Collision insurance that I have on the truck my total insurance premium will drop from $$700 a year to $375 a year.

If I crash the truck, the insurance company will give me Actual Cash Value only.

If somebody has a Kelly blue book handy, maybe he could look up the value and let me know?

    Thanks in advance!

I’d guess around 7-8k depending on the frame condition and if it’s 4x4 or not.

KBB is probably not even $5k at the top ... insurance agent has told me they do not determine ACV by that piece of garbage book lol
    but Geico might?

this table may be of some interest to you

your truck (on this table) is 'worth' the same or more than a few similarly equipped 2nd gens are now

According to KBB it is worth like $6k-$8k. I would get pretty basic insurance if you drive it that little... I drive double that much in a month and have liability only.

"Actual Cash Value" is a completely meaningless term. KBB doesn't publish an "actual cash value" so my guess is they determine that value themselves.

KBB is on-line, probably best that you look it up yourself (kbb.com). Only you know what options it has...

For reference, tho, my 2004 TRD 4x4 doublecab (130k miles) is valued at $8-10k private party.

Hey, thanks for the tips! I went there and found a value of $8200 tops for my truck to a private party.

when my 76 Ford 4X4 was stolen in 99 the insurance company wanted to give me only $1500. I had just restored her and she was only 1 month old. It took up until the week before the "dealing in bad faith" case was to be filed and they finally setteled for the receipts that I had. From the insurance companies perspective I understand their position but what they dont understand is that sometimes things are irreplacable and giving me $ isnt going to replace the truck.

When I sold my 98 tacoma 4x4 v6 sr5, 89k miles in 2015. I thought the blue book was around 6k. I listed it on Craig’s list and the first day I had a lot of interest. I sold it to the first person that showed up for I think 7k. I could of got more I think, but at that point I wanted it gone. The people I talked to on the phone and the guy that bought it, all recited KBB and that’s what they were comfortable with.
Sure, you can hold out as long as you like, but if you want to get rid of it quick, you need to be at KBB or over a bit. It will be a easy sell, especially if you have organized many records. I could have sold a dozen of 98 Tacoma’s.

It also depends on the insurance company. My 01 DCSB 4x4 with 212k miles was declared totaled and I spent over a week politely arguing and disagreeing with their assessment. In the end I ended up with less than 7k.
