Good luck. I found mine in Florida and had it shipped. It was fully rebuild by Cummins and have done research on this engine through Cummins to find out exactly what’s in it, what the mileage is and what’s been done to it. But it was about $3500...
definitely not cheap by any means but I paid for something I knew wasn’t going to have an issue.

What are your thoughts on Cummin's new crate engine with the wiring and everything ready to go?

I work with Diesel engines and equipment everyday but know little about cummins little 2.8 crate engine program. But the largest downside I see to that is it has a fully aftertreatment system with it (emissions package) and haven’t seen much in the aftermarket support as of yet. All I know is personally I think that the engine is to small to be put in anything but a bone stock 4x4 vehicle or medium size car. As of now I doubt it can handle big tires or a somewhat heavy vehicle. Then again it’s to soon to tell. So in all honesty I have no idea.

I would wait for the next series that's larger displacement personally... 2.8L with 267lb-ft 161hp isn't terrible but steep for 9k.

if the price tags weren’t so steep I’d give it a shot but for that price I would have put a 4.5L common rail Cummins in this but I’ll stick with my Dinosaur 4bt that I know can support what modifications I’m going to throw at it and the abuse I’m going to put it through.
This truck is going to be a heavy monster and I will not be nice to it.

I'm curious, how are you going to deal with the wiring for the truck?

    For my build?
I’m leaving the factory chassis harness in the truck so I can still operate the radio, lights, wipers, heater, and so on. Along with tapping into the key/ ignition circuit to run the engine since the engine only needs a few wires to run. Most likely will use an external start button to run the starter seeing as it pulls a lot of amperage. Still working on getting wiring diagrams for the truck to make sure it is reasonable to do it in the way I’d like.

So as I understand you're going to merge the Cummins engine ECU with the existing Tacoma interior and body harness?

4bt Cummins don’t have an ecu. They are fully mechanical minus the power wire for the shut off solenoid, alternator power, starter power and signal wire and a ground. That’s all the engine needs to run and operate.

It won’t let me upload a video from my phone but I had the engine running on the ground with nothing but a fuel can, battery and a jumper wire. That’s how simple this engine is.

No shit it's that simple? I knew diesels were relatively simple electrical wise but I didn't realize it was that barebones.

My dream is to do a diesel swap like this one day but poor me lives in California where the Beaureu of Automotive Repair would have a heart attack when they can see that I "removed the required emissions system".

Got it. I’ll do that when I get the engine running in the truck. Should only be a few weeks before that’s reality.

It is that simple on this engine. But this engine is a Dinosaur in today’s standards. The engines I work on for a living have 3 Ecu’s to make them function properly and you can thank the state you live in for all the emissions that go with them.
But don’t get me wrong I love the emissions. Only because they fund my pension and living hahaha
