If the difference on what you could buy a used clean one and the buyback amount is large enough, you may be able to find a shop to do the work and still be a ahead a little.

How much you think Toyota will give me for my 98 PreRunner with 396,000 miles? Haha.

llamas98taco, Toyota uses 150% of Kelly Blue Book resale(not trade in) values. If your truck has a KBB resale of $4000, they pay you $6000.

    llamas98taco,

First, inspect your frame yourself. Do you see any through hole rust areas or any other areas that look like a potential failure point? Look around the spring hangers in particular. If you find a area in question, schedule a frame inspection at a Toyota dealer, no charge.

If your truck fails the inspection, Toyota, not the dealer, will begin the process. Toyota will use the K.B.B value and offer you a settlement. Toyota will then buy the truck from you. You are not required to buy a new Toyota or any other vehicle. That will be your decision alone. This is Toyota standing behind their product.

See my other post on this thread.

I still need to fax them my title before they can move on to the offer. I'm walking on egg shells with this. I don't want to get the crusher ball rolling too much before i weigh all of my options. I'm going to look into the frame swap solution and see if i can financially do it and if it won't consume me and result in failure. I do like what blitzburgh99 is saying. Thanks for getting my gears spinning! I wish i researched this thoroughly last year when my frame passed :(. Then i could have prepared my frame, had it pass, Toyota would have put the coating on, i would have my baby for at least 5 more years, then if it failed within that 5 yrs, i would utilize the buy back if need be! I even asked Toyota to wipe my frame inspection from their file! Said, can we just make like this didn't happen and i'll see you next year? No can do!

I just found a prerunner in my area listed for 4995. I sent them a message feeling out an offer of 4000. It has 221,000 miles. I need to go look at the frame and check carfax to see history and make sure it has spent its life in Texas.

    Messyt..keep us posted

If your truck fails do you have the choice of keeping your truck or do you have to give it up?

you have to give it up, right on the spot in most cases.

Thats what I've heard. You could call the dealer just to make sure.

    Pol500,

Unless your truck is totally unsafe to drive after an inspection, no you do not have to give it up right then. It is your truck, no one can tell you what you have to do with it. If the frame is ready to collapse right then, you might have to sign a waiver at worst.

This is still America, no matter what the politicians think.

    Totally wrong!

    ^^^ Pretty much correct.

You would probably be asked to sign a waiver of acknowledgement, but even that you can refuse to do. Just get in and drive away.

*Note... The buyback offer is a onetime offer and one you will never have matched anywhere else. IMO it would be quite foolish to refuse it.
For example: If your truck was totaled in an accident or stolen... an insurance settlement would never come close to the same $$.

This guy is being way too emotional about a truck. He's not following any sound logic. I do hope that he follows your advice, for he's own sake.

They no longer make a frame for the 95.5 - 2000 Tacomas.
That's why there's the buyback offer vs the frame replacement for the 2001 - 2004 Tacomas.

It's not being too emotional about a truck! I want to keep the truck but definitely keep it safe too! I just want to weigh out my odds 1st before i give up a classic 1998 Limited edition Tacoma. They are super rare, go ahead try to find one. I bet since the buy back, i have one of the last 98 limited tacomas on the east coast or in the country. I'm not a hardcore offroad truckin dude, I have a 86 Banshee for that, trust me now that's my unsafe vehicle! Anyway, i didn't modify the truck, it's all original with the exception of a new toyota Catalytic converter(scumbag thiefs!). I am looking around for a new frame or a cheap taco to swap frames, however, it's quite possible i may take the buy back if i can coordinate a logical solution. If i were to sell this truck to one of you guys, how much would you offer me?

Thanks once again for helping me with this descision.
I faxed my title and registration to Toyota. I will post back as soon as i get an offer then we can go from there.

One more thing, i found a 2001 taco but it's a manual trans and i heard that the manual trans for 2nd gens have issues. What do you think about the 2001 in comparison? Thanks!
