Hi, I bought my Tacoma in 1998 and still have it. The seat belt started fraying a couple of years ago and then got stuck in the box on the floor. A local mechanic (retired now) used tools to take off the fraying and managed to get the belt to move freely. He said that this should be okay for some time and if not he would hunt around for a 1998 seat belt. It did work for a long time and this great mechanic retired. In the last month the fraying got worse and belt kept getting stuck. I had to clip it in various places so it would not slide back into the box. Sometimes I forgot to clip and struggled to pull out the belt.

Two days ago I had Toyota replace the seat belt. They ordered it and when it was completed they said that they did not receive the cover (the part that goes near the ceiling of the truck to cover part of the seat belt). The cover that was on the old seat belt would not fit on the new seat belt because the seat belt is an updated 1998 model. They have ordered the 1998 cover that was not sent along with the seat belt, but they told me it is possible that this may not fit into my Toyota - they are not sure. I did ask if Toyota could somehow adjust it if it does not fit or come up with another suggestion and was told no and that if it does not fit then it is okay to use the seat belt without the cover as the cover is only for show and does not help in any way with the functioning of the seat belt.

I do not know much about vehicles and could someone please let me know what would you do. I am not worried about the look of it, but I do not want a problem down the road if it does affect the functioning of the belt. I had hoped that the gentleman at Toyota would give me suggestions of how to find a cover or if there was a way to make adjustments and he didn't, so I am posting this. If you all think it is fine without a cover, then good. If not, suggestions would be appreciated. I have only driven once since getting the new seat belt and so far, so good.

    Thank you,
