The driver's side seatbelt in my truck is frayed and doesn't retract. From what I've read here this is a common problem.

The Toyota parts websites list the same part number for the passenger and driver's side. So, I guess I could just switch them and then my passenger would be the one hurt in an accident. However, since that passenger is usually my wife or one of my kids, I'm gonna fix it.

I've been searching for an solution that is cheaper than the $300 the dealer wants for a new OEM belt. Other years and other models in 1998 are cheaper, but that doesn't help me.

The obvious choices are junk yards, ebay and this forum. E-bay didn't have any used ones for my truck in my color. Where I live Tacos are very popular so there really aren't many in the junk yards and the ones that are there have already been picked over pretty well.

I found a company that will replace the webbing and recondition the retractor back to factory specs and give you a lifetime warranty for $75 plus about $15 in shipping. www.safetyrestore.com has been around for 30 years and have tons of great reviews. I am not affiliated with them in any way.

$90 to restore the retractor to factory spec and replace the webbing makes more sense to me than buying a used belt for $50 with 20 year old webbing, even if the retractor works right (for now). The life I could save is my own!

Anyhow.... since this is a common problem and I hadn't seen this solution mentioned I figured I'd post this.

If anyone has gone this route, please share your experience.

I just replaced mine (99 SR5 4x4 xtracab).. The seatbelts are side specific. Here is the one I bought in Oak for $175 + SHIPPING. THis is the best source I found online as they did not charge for hazardous material shipping (the retractor has some kind of propellant in it to lock on collision)

Camelback Toyota quoted me $144 Sipped for a driver’s seatbelt back in December, I just checked.

I must have been looking at the wrong year or part number. I checked again and today the belt and retractor in Oak is $143 plus about $11 in shipping. The driver and passenger side also have different part numbers. So, I was double wrong. Oops.

$90 including shipping is still a better deal, but its not new OEM.

This is the part number for the extra cab sr5. 73220-04070-E1

I think 1999 had 'pretensioners' that 1998 didn't have, which may explain the hazardous shipping charge.

Maybe SafetyRestore will be useful to someone else with an expensive seat belt repair.

Sounds like you were looking at a year that had the explosive pretensioner. Those will be more expensive. Our 1998 trucks didn’t have a pretensioner.
