Hey guys, I just bought this 1999 Tacoma and wanted to do an oil sample to see how the engine is. The guy I bought it from said the oil had about 1500 miles on it (over the span of 2 years) I got the oil sample back and iron seems a bit elevated for only 1500 miles. Seems high for even a normal interval. What are y’all’s opinion on this? Should I keep it and do another oil sample in 5k miles? Or do you think the engine has some significant damage already. The truck seems to run fine. This is my first Tacoma, love the truck I just wanna make sure it’s healthy and will last me a long time. Thanks in advance for the input.

    Those BlackStone analysis are good/accurate
    However
To truly get an exact “health” report on the engine…..you need Multiple reports to compare data

I paid for a report just bc all my race friends were doing it 15yrs ago
Came back with such high copper level that motor would seize at any moment
    (Per report)
I freaked out and compared to my Subie race friends……they all had same lvls of copper

can’t determine shit from 1-2 reports

Can determine if you have 4-5 reports and continue to change oil as recommended

Thank you! I will continue to do samples and monitor it.

I would do fresh oil and coolant....
and then watch those like a hawk.

Thats gonna tell more than anything.

I would assume not so great past.....and do several frequent oil changes with some premium synthetic
    ....maybe couiple 2K intervals

and then be looking for oil leaks around the engine
make it a hobby to clean it up...

If you're not losing any fluids.....then you can proceed and spend money on the rest of it.....
    or get rid of it.

No need to go super short on the interval just yet. The summary is trustworthy - iron is a bit high, but that could be down to some part of your engine wearing harder this oil change. Or this oil change could have had a disproportionate amount of idling, so it has a lot of time on the engine for relatively few miles.

All in all, just keep sending samples every oil change, and keep an eye on the other tell-tales of your engine health, and you'll be fine.

While this is a great discussion, what can you do about it? Like what was said above, keep the oil changed and drive her.

    Miles on the truck?

I mean it is 26 years old. At a paltry 5k/yr that would be 130k, 10k/yr would be 260k.

How many owners? I assume no clue of service intervals over the years or how it was used, ie pampered vs hard worked.

Do a compression check for giggles, make sure the level stays correct with the right spec oil.

I'd personally be more concerned about the ball joints failing (it's a 1st gen thing) and/or frame rust if it ever lived in salt country.
