Took truck to mechanic to replace IAC. He ran diagnostic and told me to spray cleaner into throttle body. However, when I disconnected tube at throttle body the truck kept dying. Any advice?

If you’re taking off the intake hose, then the maf is no longer metering the air going into the engine and the computer doesn’t know what to do.

I would just take the throttle body off and clean it on the bench

Seafoam makes a can with a 180 degree bend in the tube that you're supposed to slip under the boot while the boot's still on the throttle body.

Can't recommend. I tore the boot trying it when I first got my truck. Must work for some people, though.

Makes sense... didn't think of that. Your hose probably tore cause it was old.

...and thanks 0xdeadbeef...am a senior and can't really do the things I used to do. Was gonna do what you suggested but if I went to do all that I'd be as well to replace IAC while I had it apart

Correct way is to take throttle body off and carefully clean upside down, so cleaner doesn't go into electrical stuff...

Carbon you cant just dissolve it.....it has to be floated off with a continuous pushing spray......

Same with the egr valve......that may be whats causing the problem.....maybe carbon clogged.....

These including IAC get carbon build up......

Taking throttle body off is complicated......because of the rats nest of hoses, connectors, and water lines....

Just using the seafoam with the curved straw.....dont think it will do the job.....
Ive used that system before....and would not recommend on an old model.....could cause more new problems..

Careful....I was working on something completely different....damaged a fuel line...so $208 and a week later.....

Yes, after re-examining your post I see the hassle of removing the throttle body....aargh...

If you have no other way......pull neg of battery....
pull the intake tube.......and then gently spray with a straw on your carb cleaner.....
maybe an oversize artist brush for corners....
Clean throat and butterfly as best as possible....

HOwever maybe spread lightly over several cleanings...

Then let it sit for a day or two before hooking battery back up.
let all that electrical dry out real good....

If your IAC is sticky.....you have to pull TB to get to that.....
if you let that iac completely gum up and fail.....they're $300 for new one....a real one...
