It sounds like rubber rubbing against metal.....It happens mostly when I shift gears or let up on the gas peddle and kind of coast. It doesn't seem to be coming from a bearing because it doesn't have a rhythm to it....It's like I have something in the bed that is rubbing when the truck it not under acceleration but over say 30 mph.

I thought maybe it was the rubber hanger for the tail pipe but that didn't squeak much when I grabbed a hold of it with a good pair of gloves.

    Any other ideas.....?

Just went out and checked during lunch....It's not the tailgate....and I do not think it's the leaf springs because they do not squeak at all when I jump up and down in the bed of the truck......?

    I have no idea....

They appear to have been recently lubed well......I just bought the truck a week ago. I'm wondering if it's the dbl cardan joints....? It is a 4X4 single cab.

Really only does it when I left off the gas/push in the clutch to change gears going from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th.

I have put almost 1000 miles on it and it just started.

50 mile trip home today and it only once started to make the sound....Not even long enough for me to grab my cell to record it. Got the rear jacked up off the ground and the u-joints seem just fine to me and I have replaced a few bad ones. Every fitting on it has recently had grease except the middle one that goes to the center ball type bearing in the cardan joint. From what I read that one gets some kind of special grease and all I have is just plan lithium grease.

I'll read back thru all the info and try to figure out the correct grease I need unless someone knows right off hand.....?

Could your bed be rubbing up against the cab?

It might be coming from the front but I don't think so..... Bed is not rubbing.... I have crawled everywhere under it to look for something rubbing and can't find anything. I hope maybe it was something stuck somewhere and it fell off.... But I'm not that lucky.

If it helps any, the double cardan on my single cab went bad on me, and it made a metallic rattling sound that would get worse the faster you'd drive. It also cause a good deal of vibration. So I don't think your issue sounds like the double cardan, but I have been wrong before :p Good luck man!

That sounds exactly like what I had last month. I narrowed it down to the center support bearing (i.e. carrier bearing) even those two shops disagreed. I slid underneath a coworkers Tacoma and her's had ~1/8 inch of play while mine had ~1/2 inch. I replaced the bearing and it has been good ever since.

So the way to check is to grab the driveshaft near the center support bearing and with a moderately-aggressive hold start pushing up and down. If you have ~1/2 inch then it is too much.

My single cab does not have a center support bearing.....Single straight shaft, cardan right behind the transmission and then a single U-joint at the rear differential.

I looked the cardan over real good tonight and it looks great no play and nothing split or busted. I found the right grease and greased the middle zerk fitting which was missed the last time the guy I bought the truck from had it greased.

I didn't hear a peep out of it on my trip to or from work today and that is 100 mile round trip.

this might sound simple but I got a squeaking like that from my exhaust. Maybe the dealership f'd with some of the exhaust hangers before they sold it, i.e. new cat or muffler. Those rubber exhaust hangers can squeak as can new exhaust setups. give the exhaust a jiggle… you'll know
