1GR-FE swap on a 3rd gen Tacoma

Thinking about doing a 1GR-FE swap on my 2022 Tacoma when the warranty expires. The engine is currently has makes good high end power, however, it feels underpowered at low engine speed.

 

Not worth the hassle.
It is a fantastic engine no doubt but not worth the trouble .

 

Swap in a 20r then get a junkyard turbo off a duramax, I doubt the drivetrain could handle that much power though so you’d probably need a set of Rockwell axles and a way to adapt an eaton fso transmission

 

Why?

Just sell it and get a 2nd gen. If you start hacking it up all you're going to do is ruin it's value

 

Buy a 4Runner and make it into a pickup truck

 

Why not go back further to the 5vz? It powered the tundra.

 

Find a pre-2022 Tundra with a 3UR-FE 5.7L Lexus V8, or a pre-2023 Sequoia or GX460 with same...

...and buy it.

Sell your current truck at current book and it will be nearly a wash.

 

You’ll save a ton of time, frustration, disappointment, and wasted energy by just buying a magnussen blower and regearing the axles

 

A regear and tune is a lot cheaper and lesser headaches

 

You’ll trade an engine that prefers to be over 4000rpm for another that gets severe asthma over 4000rpm. Yet within everyday normal driving parameters, there’s not as much difference as you might think or hope there’d be. What they both really need is just a few more gears.

 

Or a few more kids.
