This is done when the engine is assembled at the assembly plant. Think about it logically for a min and how the procedure is done. The seating of the rings and bearings is very specific. It’s not reliant on some dude take the car or truck around a track for a few miles if that. It is done on a specialized machine. They don’t just plop the engine in a body and hope for the best. This would be illogical. Most engines are hand built for the most part.

If this was not the case why would Amsoil say break-in oil is not needed for new engines from the factory? It only applies to crate and rebuilt engines. I’ve seated rings before on a rebuilt motor and it was for the most part with the car in park before it is driven hard. The break-in manufacturers reference is not the seating of the rings and bearings. This is not what they are referencing nor are we specifically talking about in this thread, or at least so I thought… I’m telling you, our engines would be f’d up if this was not done at the factory.

Amsoil specifically mentions 200 miles. If you think about it logically it makes sense why.

When do I use break-in oil?
New cars and trucks don’t need break-in oil. The manufacturer will typically require you to drive under light-to-moderate load for a few hundred miles, then change oil. After that, you’re good to go.

Racers, competitors or gearheads using a rebuilt or new crate engine, however, should use break-in oil. Follow the engine builder’s directions or the instructions that came with the crate engine.

How long to run break-in oil?
Another rule of thumb states you should season a flat-tappet cam by running the engine above 2,500 rpm for 15 minutes.

As for seating the rings, our testing has shown it can take as few as seven dyno passes. That time varies depending on the engine, ring tension, cylinder hone and other factors.

Engine builder Jesse Prather used to run an engine 2-3 hours on the dyno to seat the rings…if they seated at all. Using AMSOIL Break-In Oil reduced that time to just 10-15 minutes.

The issues with manufactures, they want to eliminate as many warranty claims as possible telling owners to baby their vehicles during the break-in period. The end result is usually less engine hp numbers for the life they own their vehicle. It doesn't hurt a new engine to put the heel to the steel for short periods. Just refrain from constant driving like you stole it.

Not sure what's meant by that comment, but I didn't exactly baby my truck for the 1st 1200 miles. I think doing some moderate towing at 500 miles helped, plus the need to blow by a few slow poke's.

I changed my oil at 1000 miles, then 5000, and will change at 5000 mile intervals until I sell it.

I keep feeling were back in the 70's, and 80's when dino oil was king.

I did mine at 200 then my second at 1200. I am currently at 2100 and reaching its 1 year anniversary. I rarely drive due to WFH so moving forward I will change it either every 6 months or 5K miles whichever comes first.

6 months is overkill. You can go at least a year.

I belong to the 6 months or 5000 miles school.

But you can change it more often or less so as you see fit.
