I have searched and cannot find a definitive answer. My owners manual does not state an oil change interval for my 96 2.7. It states to check the supplement guide which I do not have. I’m changing the oil every 3K with a Toyota filter and Castrol GTX which is now synthetic blend (always thought it was conventional). Anyways, does anyone have the supplement guide or know for a fact what Toyota recommends? I keep seeing 5K but it’s always for 2nd and 3rd gen. Don’t want to waste money by changing too frequently but it’s also an older engine with 243K so changing every 3K may not be a bad idea. Thanks.

5k for synthetic is fine. There is no definitive answer. If you really need to know, send an oil sample off to be analyzed.

I have always run Mobil 1 full syn 10w-30 & oil filter and change them every 8-10k, or 1 year, whichever comes first. Never comes out super dark.

Edit: And I'm not suggesting this is right- I've never had a sample tested... But I've also never had an issue in 150k, so it works for me. Which is the point- everyone is going to have their own version of what's right, and at the end of the day, as long as you're changing it, you're right.

I’m using synthetic blend. Would really like to know what the manual stated. Guess I could always call the dealer…

I don't think a nearly 30 year old manual has much relevance in terms of modern oils. The dealer is just going to tell you the same thing.

I trust a dealer as far as I can throw em. They don’t know anything. Bunch of yuppies off the street. I know, worked at one for 2 years. I’m OCD and just curious what the manual states.

And remember, when you read the 5000/7500 (severe/normal) OCIs from 1996, that was based on dino oil, probably 5w30?

You can do the same with syn and know you are just fine.

Or have an oil analyis done and see how much further syn will safely take you, based on the health of YOUR engine.

From what I know about lubricants (admittedly not a ton), one of the main purposes of using synthetic oil is to increase the interval of your oil changes.

However I do understand wanting to be proactive, and wanting your vehicle to withstand the tests of time, thus changing oil on a regular 5k interval despite using a higher quality oil.

if I was using a synthetic (personally I would not use a blend), I would feel comfortable with 7.5k mile drain intervals. Provided you regularly check oil condition and level.

Thanks for the help everyone! I’m going to push mine to 5K with the Castrol GTX synthetic blend. That’ll save a little money.

The 1st gen ball joints don't squeak before they pull apart. If you have more than 100k on the current lower ball joints, you're on borrowed time.

I change my 1st Gen Tundra oil at 10k, but I drive it about 40k a year.

I’ve been reading about buildup on the rings from lack of oil changes. I’m running Mobil 1 from Costco cause it’s cheap. Maybe I’ll try oil analysis to see where I’m at. Tundra is at 315k right now.

A buddy I know just snapped a ring in his 88’ 22RE at 450k. He bought it new and over maintained it, ran like a champ, so he’s pretty bummed.

That seems like a lot of carbon for being 'over maintained'.

I’d love to get 450K out of mine. I only drive about 5-7K miles a year.
