My front end is mushy so I need to address it in the near future. Any thoughts on replacing just the shock absorber vs buying a pre-built, quick strut assembly to pop in? I can get a loaner coil spring compressor. I've read the coil springs on the quick strut replacements can be poor quality, but it would save me having to rebuild the thing. I've got a moderate amount of mechanical skill, but this is a new project to me.

I would assemble yourself because you save a good chunk of change. Toytec has 5100 (shock absorbers) for $225 for the pair. They've got Eibach coils that'll give about 2-2.5" of lift for $225. Then you could just buy new top hats from Toyota for like $40 or so and be about $500 all in for a decent front suspension setup. The cheapest quick strut assembly won't be much cheaper than that, and will be much lower quality.

If you're not looking for a lift at all look for Bilstein 4600s and a stock length coil spring

    Welcome to the forum!!

Just how do you use the truck ? That really can effect what you do.

I went with The assembled Coil Overs with the idea of rebuilding the original ones which still sit around waiting to get finished.

They work in my case for a few years now Towing and hauling not so much off roading. I went with the NAPA offerings.

    Good Luck

The down side all 6 the studs broke loose and needed to be cut off.

Where the truck lives can make things frustrating .

Tacomas have double wishbone coil over shock IFS.

No struts, regardless of the words used by people or on websites.

I just helped a friend in Honduras by shipping him Billy 4600's for his '02. Even with the OE coils still in place and high mileage and roads that make Pennsylvania roads seem like glass he is very happy with how the ride has tightened up.

Monroe products are garbage. If you want a pre-assembled coilover call wheeler or toytech and talk to them about what they can do for you.

Sure can! @anthro4me if you give us a buzz over here at Hotshot Offroad we can chat through some options. Based on what I am reading here I figure a Bilstein 4600 or 5100 would be plenty for you. I can also discuss what at-home spring compression looks like. It's not rocket science, but can be risky unless you take some precautions. If you're not afraid to get a little dirty though you can do it at home. Give me a call and we can help out 406-936-0206.
