Anyone ever swap a 5 speed into a automatic truck? Looking into swap one into my double cab. Wasnt sure what it all would take. Anyone also know if the engine and trans harnesses are 1 or are they separate?

2003 has electronic throttle body. It requires a different computer to start with. The correct computer is hard to find and average $400-$600 alone.

The best plan if you really want to do this and not just sell this truck and buy a manual transmission .

Find a donor truck with all the parts swap over all the parts plus the ECM Engine Harness Sensors etc

If you get lucky and find a 2003 even better you might get lucky

Merge the Ecm to your Truck

I have the same exact Tacoma as yours and I did my swap 2 years ago and still running perfecy with no issues.. All the components bolt right up just like stock (Transmision, Clutch, etc) You can use your stock Harness and Auto Ecu but you'll end up throwing codes for the missing solenoids that the stock auto Ecu will be checking for once you turn the key, it will drive just fine with those codes.. You'll have to drill into the firewall to mount the clutch master cylinder and clutch pedal... There's not alot of wiring involved with the swap just a few to wire up the reverse lights and a few to depin when you do find a manual Ecu just to make sure you won't fry the Ecu from any type of feedback.. You'll also have to make sure the intermidiate rear driveshaft is 31" from flange to flange as for mines my tacoma was a prerunner when I bought it brandnew and now it's 4x4 5speed after the swap.. You'll throw no CEL once you get the manual Ecu which I'm currently been running for over a year and my tacoma is my daily so I racked up quite a few miles and have had no problems.. Any questions feel free to PM me or post on here and I'll be glad to assist you if you have anymore question... But I'll upload some files that will help you.. So on the Ecu file all the N/a gets depinned but you can leave the pins in if your Going to use your auto Ecu but if u run the manual ecu I highly recommend depinning the wires just to make sure nothing gets fryed... And I've uploaded a pic of the Ecu withvthe part number , this will only work in the 2003 models only and nothing else..

Forgot to mention you'll also need to wire the auto neutral safety switch wires that goes to the transmission to the clutch pedal or you can also just jump those wires and you'll won't need to push the clutch in to start the truck

I spent the last two days reading through that entire thread! You have definitely inspired me to do the auto-to-manual conversion on my '03 X-Cab TRD Off Road. My truck is already 4x4, so I don't have to do that conversion as well. Not to hijack ToyoTaco's thread here, so once I secure all the parts, I will start my own conversion thread. I tip my hat to you (and all the guys on TTORA) for providing all the detail on the transmission swap.

someone on here long ago did this with their 4 door taco. They also put the longer bed on and extended the frame a well. Odd why they never had the 4 door as a manual option. I think you could order 2nd gens like that though.

yeah Toyota dropped the ball on not offering the manual with the 1st gen double cabs. I think they probably figured people getting double cabs were doing so more for family hauling and not interested in a manual. And as a married guy with a kid I have to say that offends me. I'm in the market for a manual 3rd gen T4R at the moment, not so easy to find in good shape for reasonable money.

but yeah they did start offering the double cabs with manuals in 2005+

Totally agree. I am keeping my 1st Gen but also am looking for a 2nd gen, access cab, long bed and 6 speed. A few of those things make them a damn unicorn.
