Tried this on my 2002 rust heap tacoma, and it actually follows the same formula as my 2004, not the same as ClevSix's 2001. Was not expecting to see that!

    Okay, so funny story.

I was messing around with Torque Pro again, and I found two “stock” PIDs, one called “Trans temp (method 1)” and the other is “trans temp (method 2)”

Method 2 works for my 2004!

It seems to have a more reasonable value than either the C to F conversion equation, and is within about 5 or 10 degrees of the equation that is used for my 4Runner, and seems more reasonable based on nothing more than a "gut" feeling...

I don't know what kind of black magic this is, or why I had never noticed it before (maybe due to an app update?) but for me it seems to be working!

Method 1, btw, just gave “no data”.

Here's a shot of the 2 "methods" top is method 1 (no data), method 2 is bottom

This is he shot of my custom PID with my 4Runner equation that I posted earlier.

Nice! Neither of the built-in methods has ever worked on my 01 but I did just run an update on Torque. I'll haveo check it again.

    Thanks for the input!

I tried it again after the update and neither built in method works on my truck.

I spoke with an old retired Toyota mechanic. He said that he doesn't remember the years but there were several minor variations in the 1gen Tacoma transmission. I'm paraphrasing here but this is what he said, "Early versions had a single rudimentary temperature sensor. Then they upgraded it and you could pull the temp from the ecu. Later versions had 2 temperature sensors. Both could be read from the ecu." He said there were many minor tweaks over the years. Keep in mind this is coming from a guy that retired from a dealership in 2005 and he's tried hard to avoid turning wrenches ever since.

Anyway, if he's right, if you have a revision with both sensors, the older codes and newer codes will both get you a transmission temp. The two will vary some because they are in different locations. This might apply to your 04. @jbrandt

@BartMaster1234 @ClevSix @gearcruncher Does anyone know what the PID might be for a 1999 Tacoma. I tried the 01B4, and it didn't work. Keeps saying NO DATA. Could it be that my year doesn't have trans temp monitoring capability since it is a 99 PreRunner 2.7l auto.

As I understand, in a 99 you should be able to get a trans temp but there's no guarantee.
