OEM rack painted black, was on the truck when I bought it. Haven’t actually used it yet, but love the look.

    Thread bump.

Looking to eventually add a roof rack to the cab and cab-high topper. However for the cab I do not want to permanently install it. I think I've seen Yakima racks on TW that secure to the door frames, but I cannot properly engage my Google-Fu skills for some reason.

Can anyone link me to this type of product, if it exists.

    Thanks

I have the Yakima Q-towers but I can’t see those for sale anymore. Looks like they may have switched to this style instead...

sweet. And forgive my ignorance this is the first I’ve ever explored roof racks.... but all I would then have to get is load bars (or cross bars whatever they’re called) to go into those towers? I see they list the different type they can accept in the features section.

lastly: do you like your set up?

yeah it looks like it can accept the traditional round bars like what I have or the more aerodynamic flat bars.

I do like mine. It was on the truck when I bought it and the original owner said he installed them after a few years of owning the truck. So they’re at least 15 years old and still do the job. They looks like ass from UV fading and some oxidation but other than that I don’t think I’d trade them for anything else. The ability to take them off if needed is nice.
I had my RTT amounted to them for 5 years without trouble. Solid as a rock.

Yakima used to have a model called "Q-Towers" that were universal to "all" vehicles (with a roof). To get them to fit a specific vehicle, you chose the correct "Q-clips", which are Q117 for our 1st gen double cabs.

Go here: https://pit.yakima.com/#Fits put in 2004 / Toyota / Tacoma Double Cab 4dr (60.25" Bed) / Naked Roof | QTower (HISTORICAL).
Here you can see all the specs of parts you'll need/want as well as WHERE they should be mounted on the truck. There is a specific area they recommend for installation. I'd measure and mark these out with some masking tape to see how/where they will sit.

You can find used Q-Towers and clips around the internets, like at ReRack.
    $140 for the Q-Towers: https://www.rerack.com/yakima-q-towers-set-of-4-return/
$33-43: One Set (2) Q117 Clips (You will need TWO sets)
$XX: Round Yakima crossbars in the preferred width (48" is about cab width, but a lot of people seem to like the stick-out out look of really long bars)
$3: One pack of tennis balls to put on the ends of the crossbars BEFORE you bang you head on them and bleed everywhere. :anonymous:

IF you wanted the new Yakima version (BaseLine Towers), you're looking close to $500 with tax.

Here's the old Q-Tower system on our trucks (from this thread):

    Awesome. Thanks.

yeah I’d only need to run these when I’m taking a canoe or something so the ability to only run them as-needed is a great perk.

side note: do you get a lot of wind noise with them on?

Thank you for all that info.

Any advantage to having round bars versus the newer flat/aerodynamic ones?

Probably not while driving the aerodynamic brick of a Tacoma...

One benefit of the round bars would be to easily attach random stuff with cheap u-bolts from the hardware store.

I mean they definitely do have some noise but my truck is so noisy with the tires and lack of sound deadening, bumper, etc. so I don’t really notice it. I put a fairing on it and I don’t think it made much of a difference. The flat style bars are supposed to be a lot more quiet too. Round ones tend to whistle but I have not really experienced that with mine.

    Brilliant

But will round bars negatively affect my EAF status?

I just got the baseline towers with the jet steam and some BC 171 but they said it won’t hold the Yakima skyline tent does anybody have experience with the new ones on there first gen?

Standard Yakima bars on Q Towers. Set up with two Copperhead bike trays. Pic also shows a tandem bike rack that doesn’t stay on there all the time. Thinking about getting a Loadwarrior and doing a shallow mount. Holds kayaks well as is but would like to get J Hooks.
