Make the frames out of Channel like the old Fords and Chevies

It would not be that hard to do .

No real rusting because the slop can`t really get trapped

Did Toyota fix the problem after 2010?

I don't know if it's fixed, but the frame in my 2012 2Runner looks like a swis cheese - so many drain holes all over the place. But I still see surface rust on some welding seems. It took 5 cans of fluid fill to cover the entire frame in and out.

Dude. Don't play with my heart strings. My first gen's frame is held together by patches of metal welded together and there are rust holes I can put my arm into. If Toyota really does have to swap first gen frames i would be stoked. But I doubt it.

I just got called the mechanic said my truck is unsafe for me to pick up, and that I have to wait to get a loaner til Wednesday... and the game begin. When I go Wednesday I will find out if it is the 1st gen recall that is being reinstated like the first guy told me or if he is just a jackass. anyone that has gotten the frame replacement have any suggestions, or questions to ask? And anything else the forum wants to know besides the reinstated recall being 1st or 2nd gen?

As many details as you can on it if it is for the 1st Gen...anything you can get outta that guy... actual dates, which years specifically (95.5-00 or 01-04 or both etc). And, ya, anything in writing... I'm more of a "believe it when i see it" kinda guy on this one....

Get as much info as possible. What gen? What years? What's being done to those affected? Does it have to have been treated in the past?

I think you need to go back and edit your first post. A lot of people are going to give their hopes up based on hearsay. Until I see an official service campaign or recall document I'm calling baloney

Only thing recalled on my 2001 is spare tire bracket. PO removed before I bought. This is going to cause a lot of commotion, but not getting my hopes up. Went through all the mumbo jumbo with corporate over my frame, they are done with 1st gens

The frame rust issue is not covered under a "Recall". It's an extended warranty voluntarily offered by Toyota, provided you meet their criteria. You will not find anything about it on a recall site. However, you will find plenty of complaints about the rusty frames on the NHTSA site.

I was at my dealer today having my frame inspected and talked warranty with the service manager. He said nothing about any change to the existing program. Last October Toyota settled a class action lawsuit on 2nd gens frames from 2005-2010 (12 year extended warranty on the frames).

I would love to hear that what you heard was correct, but we've got to see that in writing. There are way too many owners holding the bag on these rusted out frames.

    Keep us informed please.

    Stock for. Ow
If I was guessing, the only ones who might get something from Toyota would be the 2001 and up trucks.

I had a 2000 bought back and crushed. I begged for a new frame lol, would've been way cheaper than that book and half check Toyota wrote

Would like to see something come of this, I've got a family friend with a tundra that's eat up in rust. Maybe there's hope for those trucks too

My frame (2000) shows zero signs of rust anywhere that I can see, but I would still be stoked for this.

That said, no offense to OP but I call BS till I see something official

Maybe all of us 1st genners should get on board with the lets sue Toyota train! I'm in the process of getting the parts and pieces together to do a restore on my frame this fall (if it stays together that long). I've done the call corp. thing and was told TS very nicely. It's my mistake for buying the truck and so I'm prepared to do what I have to, to keep her up and running as long as possible. This would be great "if" true but as many have said, I'm not holding my breath for any thing from the big guys.

Despite what people think even Toyotas have a projected lifespan. The newest 1st gen is now 13 years old and it's funny how now one has noticed the last gen HiLux 89-94 has all up but become a rare site in the rust belt states.

You are absolutely correct. Toyota trucks, just like everything, have a lifespan. They just happen to be a lot longer than most. Despite that, my 84 and 97 are still singing that Rick Astley neva guna give u up:Dsong to each other

This is very interesting. Certainly not going to hold my breath for anything positive for 1st Gen. I kind of have mixed feelings since I just resurrected my 99 with a 3 month and over 2k frame and other rusted-out-crap repair.

The effort was worth it to me since I maintain the best looking trucks on the road then and now are the 1st Gen Tacomas. It was my dream truck in high school back then, and still is.

But even still I'm curious how this shakes down...

It's amazing what we put up with for a dream... I had a 97 for almost 10 years that rotted out. Missed the "recall" window by three weeks to the day. 4.5 years later I took a gamble on another and in February got my current 99. It's been an adventure so far...
